An Indiana Tech instructor has been fired after letting students discuss his master's thesis on pornography...
Tschaepe worked at the university between 1999 and 2001 and returned in January 2004 after completing his master’s degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. During his years at Indiana Tech he taught philosophy and communications classes as well as worked as an admissions counselor. Now, if only he had assigned them Andrea Dworkin...that would have been absolutely ok, no?
In February, he was assigned to an ethics class in the College of Professional Studies. The classes in the college are geared toward older, non-traditional students and take place once a week for five to six weeks.
Tschaepe said the ethics textbook for the class included topics such as gay marriage, sexuality and pornography. Because his master’s thesis had been on pornographic movies, he decided to use his research instead of the textbook chosen by the university, he said.
“The texts that are in the book are really shallow,” he said. He asked the students to read his thesis, which discusses the complexities of pornographic films and gives detailed descriptions of what happens in some movies.
But Tschaepe said his descriptions of the films are “biological descriptions.”
“The reason (for the descriptions) is so people didn’t have to watch the film to know what was going on,” he said.
After distributing his thesis, however, some students complained about the work, and Tschaepe said he was told by university officials before the final class in March to apologize to the students. He didn’t apologize, he said, and a few days later he was told he was no longer needed to teach six other philosophy courses he was scheduled to instruct.
