Nearly half of the children in primary schools have no contact with male teachers, according to the agency in charge of training the profession.
Only 15 in 100 teachers of infant and primary age children are men, leaving many schools without a male role model on the teaching staff.
A campaign to recruit more men to the sector is being launched today by the Training and Development Agency for Schools. It will include the setting up of an advisory panel to assess the cause of the gender imbalance.
"Three quarters of parents believe it is important for young children to have both male and female teachers and 83 per cent said they would like to see more men teaching primary age children," said Graham Holley, the agency's executive director.
