Can't we just abolish the CRTC?
John Doyle has an excellent column in today's Globe & Mail on the CRTC 'decision' to slowly allow viewers to pick the channels they want to watch. Right now, you have to buy packages of channels - which forces you to get lots of stations you have no intention of every watchin. Unfortunately, the CRTC is going to take its time - I don't believe they actually do this until 2010....
Looking at tonight's TV menu, I have to wonder if anyone, being of sound mind and body, would actually pay for the twinkie channel that is W. When W went on the air, it was WTN, the Women's Television Network. Its mandate was to offer intelligent programming for women, made by women. It was based in Winnipeg and relied heavily on local talent. When licensed, it got a choice place on the dial - in Toronto it's right next to CBC Newsworld. Even people with a tiny number of cable channels got WTN. There was no choice. A few years ago, Corus Entertainment swallowed up WTN. Corus got ridof most of the staff; it left a handful working in Winnpeg and moved things to Toronto. Soon, WTN became W and, now, W is, like, totally about shopping. Please, free us from this inane channel ....I'd just rather let the CRTC be dissolved...and bring in some true competition...
