Another reason why I love the Tories...
If feminists think these groups are important, then let them fund them themselves...
The federal Conservative government is threatening the survival of women’s organizations by delaying funding, the NDP charged today.I'm all for shutting down the Status of Women Department. How about Status of People?
“By not responding to funding applications, the Conservatives are allowing programs to shut down, one by one,” New Democrat MP Irene Mathyssen said.
“What’s next? . . . It looks like Bev Oda is spoiling to dismantle the Status of Women Department.”
The National Association of Women and the Law closed its doors Sept. 12 due to a lack of federal funding, the NDP said, while the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action shuts down Sept. 26.

How dare you think you are a person, you're just a man in the SWC eyes... I mean really
(sorry had to fake being a feminist, I don't like faking it lol)
Never been a fan of governments funding lobby groups...if they have such a good cause, they should have no problem fundraising from their supporters.
That's exactly it. SWC are very concerned about "womens poverty", as if only women were impovershed. It makes no sense.
The Tories aren't the only party to effectively shut down these aid-recipient organizations. I remember the 'National Action Committee on the Status of Women' tried to bust up Parliament Hill and generally disgrace themselves in 1993 or early 1994 in the name of racism or the patriarchy or somesuch. In 1998 they had their "A Woman is Worth More Than a Cup of Coffee" campaign (for more money, naturally--$20 million per year was their target) which was a failure and by 1999 they had disappeared from the face of the earth (Their current Web site shows just what this group was capable of in an absence of taxpayers funding). Sunera Thobani (their x-Pres.) had retreated to the groves of academe where she continues to spew her silly invective. The last anyone saw of her was just after 9/11 when she blamed the Americans (naturally) for their loss.
Today in question period, the women MP's were whining about the poor SOW's getting their funding cut and organization's having to close their doors. Belinda slammed the REAL women organization as being anti-gay, anti-choice and said they should not get any funding.
Well listen up Belinda, REAL women are self funding, maybe the SOW's should be too!
Nice show of intolerance by a female MP against other females!
Any crap about women needing funding so they can better themselves in a man's world is just that, CRAP. The days of the "little woman" being kept down by men is long gone. These days you get what you work for. Anyone(man, woman, black, immigrant, etc.), who has the time and energy to whine, has time to get off their behinds and work. Stop holding your hand out to me to support you and/or your causes. Yes, I am a woman.
Taxpayer funding of any of these groups must be entirely eliminated before they are allowed to cause any more damage to Canadians.
Groups that advertise themselves as feminists in Canada are simply hypocrites - they were nowhere to be found when the rights of thousands of women in Ontario were in jeopardy. That demonstrated to everyone their absolute uselessness.
The move not to fund the NACSW is very unpopular here in Vancouver.
My new MP, and former NDP Premier, Dosanjh, is outraged at the Tory treatment of gays and feminists.
I'm of the opinion that the only ones who are kept down due to being a "minority" (though the idea of the government calling women a minority is laughable to me seeing as how we make up about 50 percent of the population) are those who believe - and accept - that their status will hold them back.
I'm a 19-year-old female Chemistry major. Yes, I've experienced sexism (in my high school, not at university). Have I let that stop me from doing what I want? No. Anyone who does is ... well, spineless, to tell the truth. Either that, or they're just plain lazy and don't want to work hard enough to succeed despite hardship.
Any system that seeks equality by setting different standards for a person based on sex, sexual orientation, race, etc is doomed to fail. It seems to be obvious to me what's needed: One standard. For everyone. Cut this "oh, you're a part of whatever historically hard-done group so you get special treatment." crap.
