Is this what Taliban Jack Wants?
Is this the sort of news that makes Jack Layton happy?
Taliban gunmen carried out their first assassination of a female Afghan government official yesterday, shooting the 63-year-old head of the women's ministry in the southern city of Kandahar.
Safia Ama Jan was attacked by two gunmen on a motorcycle as she left home for her office.
Her nephew Farhad said she was shot as she got into a car. "She died on the spot," he said.

Safia Ama Jan defied fundamentalist death threats to campaign for women's rights and education in the former Taliban stronghold.

There are many Afghani heroines and heros and we hear of only a few. I remember reading about two years ago of a small nameless boy who threw himself on a grenade that had been thrown at President Karzai. I think we should be proud of our forces' and government's efforts to help these brave people to secure and rebuild their country. It's a noble but hard effort and they must not be abandoned.
Jack is a little misguided man who deserves a lot less attention than he gets.
Muslims are such cowards.
I support the mission in Afghanistan, I just wanted to comment on your use of a recently much discussed meme, that of putting an outrageous comment in a post (or title) as a question, as though you're not really saying what you're saying.
"Is this the sort of news that makes Jack Layton happy?" - Of course not. That's totally inane and doesn't bolster any argument against Layton's position. I think you know that too, which is why you didn't write "This is the sort of news that makes Jack Layton happy".
Think of some outrageous examples from the other perspective.
"Is this the first step towards fascism?" The writer would defend himself saying "I'm not SAYING this is the first step towards fascism, I'm just asking the question!".
More egregiously, "Is Stephen Harper the next [insert evil dictator here]?" Again, the writer isn't comparing Harper to said dictator, just asking a question.
Anyway, generally, I'd saying using a tragic assasination as fodder against one's political adversaries is a little distateful. But if one must do it, at least do it honestly, and as respectfully as possible. Or people might start asking "Has GayandRight gone completely off the deep end?"
I think this shows how little their society has progressed. Don't even mention gay rights, women are still under severe repression!
Lord Kitchener,
I think GayandRight is implying Jack's stance is inadvertently supporting this culture. Of course he wouldn't want women gunned down in the streets for being politicians. But his view that the taliban should be allowed to regain control of Afghanistan and relations renewed with them is disturbing.
Let me get this straight . . .
You think Layton is wrong because he thinks we should end a war (that even Gordon O'Connor has called unwinable) through negotiations?
So what does that make the British Army who are already negotiating with the Taliban?
