Isn't this just plain discrimination?
I guess not if the ends justify the means.
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion is prepared to take “extraordinary measures” to boost the ranks of female candidates in the next election, including barring men from seeking nominations in some ridings. So, merit gets thrown out the window....and local democracy also gets thrown out the window...in the name of political corrrectness. Thanks to Jeremy for sending me this article.
During last year’s leadership race, Dion promised that under his watch at least a third of the party’s candidates in the next election would be women.
But campaign organizers have concluded that the ambitious goal will be impossible to reach without some intervention to secure nominations for female candidates.
So-called green-light committees, set up to run the party’s nomination process in each province, have been empowered to ensure the 33 per cent target is met. Among other things, the committees can set dates for nomination meetings and approve or reject nomination papers from those seeking to carry the Liberal colours.
Where necessary, the committees will be able to simply refuse to allow men to run for nominations in some ridings.

Stephane Dion doesn't have faith in the grass roots of his party to do what he thinks is the right thing. So much for democracy in the Liberal Party. Normally, I wouldn't care how Liberals run their party, but they are still a serious contender for power. If they treat their own party's members with such cavalier disdain, then if they ever do regain power, imagine how much worse it will be for the average Canadian than it ever was under Chretien & Martin.
It is not undemocratic to guarantee 1/3rd of the candidates to be women. The Charter of Rights & Freedoms explicity allows for the government to have programs for the assistance and benefit of women and minorities, so why can't the next governming party?
Stephane Dion is fully committed to gender equality and harmony, as he is in full favour of integrating women and minorities into the economy and the hearts and minds of the average Canadian.
Personally, I believe that Canadians will embrace Dion's policy on this issue and the environment.
Sometimes, the will of the locals must be over-ridden with strong leadership from the top down; women and minorities deserve a fair share of seats in Parliament.....I would go as far as legislating that half of all MPs must be women!
"...the will of the locals must be over-ridden..." Yep, Liberal.
Liberals like Dion find it easier to keep the little women in line - now he just has to find some women who want to run in that old man's party.
Of course it is discrimination ! THis is just so Liberal and in fact so Canadian. Nothing quite matches Darwinish as does politics. Selecting people artificially ensures the country will not get the best candidates, they'll get the "best" candidates as defined by Dion, not them . and in many ridings the citizens will vote Liberal even if their legs are being cut off...sooo ergo, this organization which is the antithesis of western liberal democracy will be seen as some kind of heroes to the uneducation hoi polloi . it sucks. it is one of those "do you still beat your wife" conundrums .
The Charter of Rights & Freedoms explicity allows for the government to have programs for the assistance and benefit of women and minorities, so why can't the next governming party?
The Charter's allowance of affirmative action is only to guarantee equality of opportunity, not equality of results. To do the latter requires the omniscience of divinity. But then, that does seem to be how many Liberals see themselves.
