Australia already backtracks on Kyoto...

Gee, they just signed it..and now they are already backtracking...

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd last night did an about-face on deep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, days after Australia's delegation backed the plan at the climate talks in Bali.

A government representative at the talks this week said Australia backed a 25-40 per cent cut on 1990 emission levels by 2020.

But after warnings it would lead to huge rises in electricity prices, Mr Rudd said the Government would not support the target.

The repudiation of the delegate's position represents the first stumble by the new Government's in its approach to climate change.

That seems like a huge change in policy. I wonder if he regrets siging Kyoto now. This may earn Australia a fossil award that have been won by Japan and Canada this week in Bali.

Typical leftists, cry foul when government acts in the interest of the people, scream about world crisis then make 180% turn about after winning on BS because the cause(BS) they champion would see them lose the next election in a landslide.
Supertramp said it best..Crisis? what crisis?

Wasn't living up to Kyoto a part of Rudd's election platform? Did he just pull a Joe Clark? Can the opposition take the government down on a vote of confidence? Is it a minority government?

Just for accuracy's sake this is NOT backing off on KYOTO, it is backing off of their initial suggestions of targets for the new POST-Kyoto phase. They're now calling for less aggressive BALI targets, and it has (well, not NOTHING but almost) nothing to do with Kyoto.

Australia has ratified Kyoto and are committed to meeting their Kyoto targets. The step-back mentioned here is a move towards a less aggresive POST-Kyoto target (or rather a less aggresive SUGGESTION for what the post-Kyoto target should be), separate and apart from the Kyoto Treaty.
