Agitation at Wilfed Laurier University...

I'm glad I am not in University right now....
B'nai Brith Canada has responded to requests from Jewish students at Wilfrid Laurier University who have expressed concern that they are being marginalized because of their support for Israel. Students pointed to a series of anti-Israel on-campus diatribes by sociology professor, Peter Eglin, whom they feel is using his status on campus to further a vehemently anti-Israel agenda. A senior B'nai Brith official was on hand today at Wilfrid Laurier University to lend support to the students and to witness first hand the negative singling out of Jewish students by this professor.

"We are concerned by calls to our 24-7 Anti-Hate Hotline from Jewish students who fear that they are being singled out for intimidation by a professor engaging in anti-Israel activity," said Frank Dimant, B'nai Brith Canada's Executive Vice President. "This professor used his self-proclaimed pulpit in the public concourse of the University to bully the Jewish students who had dared to complain to the University's administration about him. He even referred to the Jewish Students Association as a 'nefarious' group in an email he circulated.

"It is obscene for a professor to use his influence on impressionable students to promote an anti-Israel agenda and to engage in tactics of intimidation. How can he expect any student to continue to feel comfortable taking his class?

I'm embarassed to say that I graduated from WLU (by the way, it's Wilfrid, not Wilfred). Fortunately, I was in the School of Business and Econ, so I never had to endure a lecture from this guy.

I found the following link to a story in the campus paper about his so-called professor's behaviour.

I'll be sure to write the school to tell them that this is one alumnus who will never again donate another dime to the school.

The Carleton University president issued a statement regarding this type of behaviour. I was quite proud that someone is doing something about this (e.g. CUPE boycotts etc...)

However.

If we replace Jewish with conservative we are getting the same thing on our university campuses. Many conservative students feel ostracized from their peers and professors for their sentiments. They are bullied by "fuck Harper" button fundraisers by their student union.

This isn't to say that no one should do anything about what is happening to Jewish students; however, I hope this inspires us to stop any and all intellectual boycotts.

Fire his ass, that kind of conduct has no place in an educational facility.

If he was using his pulpit to denounce blacks, first nations, or asians the university would have him out the door in an instant.

It's either a deliberate, acceptable double standard, or the administration are hypocrits.
