Sex change surgery is NOT a right....
I readily admit that there are some people whose brains are wired for the other sex. However, the solution to the problem - sex-change surgery - is the wrong answer. Not only is it way too expensive....but it's way too invasive...and I don't think it brings happiness to anybody. At the heart of the problem is that we just can't change someone's sex, no matter how hard we try. Coping is a far better strategy for this problem.
Now, Alberta will have to fight this out in the Human Rights Commission...This is not the proper forum for this question - sex change surgery is NOT a right.

The idiot who thought we should pay for sex change surgery in the first place should be fired, that would save even more money.
It most certainly should not be a right.
Men and women, cannot go and cosmetically change their bodies at the expense of taxpayers, to 'feel' better.
This coverage as Philanthropist stated, should have never been covered.
We all adjust to doing without things when we know nothing different!
This will be an interesting test for the AHRC.
Cheers!
With you on this one, Fred.
BTW, how many here have heard of the poor womens-only health club manager in Ontario who turned down the membership of a pre-operation man who wants to become a woman. He still has all the "man" parts but wants to be let into a women-only club and use their facilities alongside women.
That one is at the OHRC.
I don't know. It maybe part of the solution for some people or at a minimum part of a journey they feel they need to take . I falt no one with feeling the need to go that route and it may bring some peace to some people. However, I am totally against tax dollars going towards it, perhaps some charities could be started to help those who can't afford it but it should be private money.
People are so easily manipulated by government. There is strength in numbers, so the government pits taxpayer against taxpayer. I don't believe in chiropractors, would never see one, but I realize that if I don't speak up about the way this government is slashing services because they mismanaged our money during the boom then a service I use is going to probably be next on the block. Government first gives us a demographic to hate, and they distract us with it as they go about cutting away services, so how about some solidarity. Let's tell government that we are tired of taking the hits while they get big fat raises and bonuses and fly around in a jet half empty. It is politicians who are bleeding us dry, lets not lose sight of that.
