Wilders uninvited from free speech conference....
Why are the Danes so nervous about Wilders???
Despite pressure from the Danish People’s Party the government will not invite Dutch MP Geert Wilders to free speech conference
Controversial Dutch MP Geert Wilders, founder of the Dutch right wing political party Party for Freedom, will not be receiving an invitation to the anti-extremist and free speech conference this autumn.
Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said this week that Wilders ‘associates an entire religion with hatred’ and is not welcome at the conference.
Rasmussen also said that because Wilders is already coming to Denmark in June to protest over the government’s hesitation in inviting him to the conference, no additional invitation was necessary. Wilders’ June visit has been arranged by the Free Press Society.
The Danish People’s Party (DF) is still insisting that Wilders be included in the anti-extremist conference, saying Rasmussen’s excuse is thin.
‘The two invitations aren’t at all the same thing,’ said Pia Kjærsgaard, DF’s leader. ‘But we’ll bring up the issue again in the autumn.’
Lars Hedegaard, head of the Free Press Society, criticised the government’s addition of ‘anti-extremist’ to what had been solely referred to as a freedom of speech conference.
‘It shows that Rasmussen doesn’t want to look the truth in the eyes,’ said Hedegaard. ‘And that truth is that free speech - the most precious freedom in a democracy - is under threat.’
