Once again, the Tories look homophobic...

The Conservatives have so mishandled these events....that their denial of funding for this festival, even if warranted, looks homophobic...
A gay and lesbian arts festival that was told it met all government criteria under a new tourism stimulus program learned Tuesday it was rejected for funding.

The news arrived at Montreal's Divers-Cite a few weeks after tension swept the Conservative caucus over funding for Toronto's Pride week, and just days before the beginning of the event.

The directors of Montreal's Divers-Cite had actually sprung to the defence of Stephen Harper's government earlier this month, telling The Canadian Press that the Conservatives had never treated them differently. Some in the gay community attacked them for their comments.

They had submitted a bid under the new Marquee Tourism Events Program for $155,000 to add performers and promotion to this year's $2-million event.

Government relations and marketing director Paul Girard said bureaucrats handling his file at Industry Canada told him his application met all the criteria, and had been sent up to Minister Tony Clement's office for final approval.

When he phoned to check on the bid Tuesday, Mr. Girard says he was told by a senior bureaucrat that the $100-million program had received so many requests, the government simply had to make a choice.

“We knew that anybody that was to be refused and didn't meet the criteria got a quick No,” Mr. Girard said. “As time advanced, we became more and more confident.”

Paul's sister Suzanne, the festival's director, says the organization was completely shocked by the response. Divers-Cite has received funding from Economic Development Canada for several years, as well as Canadian Heritage.

She said she felt certain that every festival was on the same footing, because it was handled by an economic department and was designed to stimulate the economy.

“We met all the criteria — this is a democracy,” Mr. Girard said. “They changed the rules as they went along.

“I feel like I've been had.”

Mr. Clement's office was not immediately available for comment Tuesday evening.
The Conservatives have funded several gay pride events in the past, and I was delighted to see them fund Toronto Gay Pride. But, when criticized for doing so, they took cover, said nothing, and seemed to take Diane Ablonczy off the case. I say seemed because they went silent, and just wouldn't talk. But, it's worse than that because they let the so-cons take centre stage without a word....

You would do much better if you were to report on what your homo brother Montreal Simon writes and posts about federal Conservatives in general and PM Harper in particular.

Teke good look:

When bunch of crazed homos in Montreal keep on spitting their venom on everything Conservatives say or do than what do you expect Harper's government to do??

I don't think the government should be sponsoring gay events. The participants seem to have trouble keeping their clothes on and I'm against government sponsored porn.

You need to look at our (the hetero's) side of things Fred. I wouldn't have anything against funding things like a gay & lesbian art's festival. I may not agree with their lifestyle, but hey, you likely don't agree with everything I do. However, when festivals like this, or the Gay Pride Parade are full of people baring it all and flaunting lewd & discusting behaviour, then yeah, I think the funding should be pulled/ not given. You don't see straight parades with people making out, or parading around naked.

A couple of points..

1. I don't watch Montreal Simon.

2. Only the Conservatives could actually do something good for gay people (whether you agree or not) and then look homophobic.

3. The silence of conservatives when challenged by a so-con is telling.

GayandRight, you made a good observation and than you fell for leftie propaganda.

Just take a look how it all works on a different issue

Majority of Conservatives are anti-abortion but they are considered racists anyway.

Most lefties support abortions but they are never considered racist.

Abortions in US are performed mostly on black women and they kill mostly black babies. We are talking genocide of black race in US.

http://www.blackgenocide.org/black.html

Despite of all that lefties who support these abortions and conduct that genocide are never racist.

How do you explain that??

Gay and Right, where does it say that because something meets some set of criteria, they automatically will receive government funding?

I must have missed how many other festivals, and parades, and fluff-events, HAVE already received taxpayer funding.

Do you know...any idea at all?

Or are we simply a convenient attack point on this one event?

Frankly our family feels that any event worth its salt should make it on its own merit. If so many love to go, than get out and make it happen.

GayandRight,
A couple of points..

1. The fact that you don't watch Montreal Simon is not an excuse as other Conservatives read his blog and based on his posts formulate their opinions about whole gay community in Canada. If you as a gay person do not bother to read and refute all the nonsense that he spews on his blog than you condone and abbet what he says on behalf of all gays in Canada.

2. Was taken care of in my previous post.

3. Silence of gay Conservatives represented by GayandRight when confronted by poison spewed by gay Liberals like Montreal Simon is even more telling as to what is their agenda.

Fred I do not want to insult you man but you should grow some spine and learn to speak out on behalf of Conservatives even against other gay man, otherwise you look like a homosexual mole who dresses up as a Conservative in order to push homosexual agenda.

See Fred - that's the problem here - no matter what the Tories do they can't win.

If they had given the money - they would be accused of "pandering".

If they don't - well nuff said.

The fact is that not everyone gets monies - yet if you are a (insert special interest group here) and you don't get the money - well it is because the CPC are (insert racist, homophobe, anti women, etc etc etc to fit) here.

An open email to Warren Kinsella from a gay Conservative
Warren Kinsella wonders how I can sleep at night:

I was sort of wondering how you can be gay and a Conservative supporter at the same time.

I mean, not only do they deny your very existence - they think cabinet ministers should be punished for appearing in any way supportive of you, or those like you.

It's your life and all that, but I was just wondering how you sleep at night.

As I've indicated before, if the Harper Cons don't want you, we do.

Faithfully yours,

Warren

I sleep fine at night - thanks for asking, Warren. How do YOU sleep at night?

I am a good friend of Eric's by the way....

I have enough spine.....my point is simple - either you fund all relevant projects, regardless of whether people are gay or straight, or you fund none.

What the Conservatives have done here is to fund a gay parade, and then disavow what they have done....which makes them look homophobic.

I wish the Cosnervatives had some spine..not me.

Exactly Alberta Girl.
So in the words of Deb Grey ,
'get the thing done and let them howl'.

It appears that this Government, when the applicants are equal but a choice has to be made,
will choose a 'family oriented' event.
I applaud that,
Gays and Lesbians have families too and should accept the decision as a fair one.

I am not asking for any preferential treatment. All I am saying is that to NOT fund events because they are gay is discriminatory.

To be silent and to not explain yourself is more than just problematic - it shows you cannot and will not answer to anybody.

Fred,
Let me explain to you some ground rules.
1. Social Conservatives are by far the largest part of CPC.
2. Social Conservatives are not moving out of CPC and you have to accept that.
3. Social Conservatives are willing to accept you in CPC as long as you leave your sexual orientation at the door
4. Social Conservatives are willing to tolerate your sexually deviant behaviour as long as you confine it to your own bedroom and you and your sexually deviant friends keep away from their kids.
5. Deep split in a gay community is only a matter of time if gay people want to be part of Conservative movement.
6. The only way that gay people can stay in CPC in a long run is if and when they abandon their "in your face" attitude towards Social Conservatives and stop endorsing and participating in events like.
Gay Pride Parade.

Fred, just look at population statistics, gay people are 2% of population and Conservatives do not need gay votes to run this country.

Fred,

You do not seem to understand politics. Converavatives invested $400000.00 in Toronto Gay Pride parade just so they could have pictures of Michael Ingnatieff marching along with bunch of naked perverts just so they could use these pictures during next elections. These pictures of Ignatieff are worth millios of dollars in donations from social conservatives.

Gay community in Montreal has their arts festival that has among other things stage performances.

Now read this:

...Buddies is currently in the second week of its Rhubarb Festival, and there are lots of great shows on schedule, including my own solo show, Fucking Stephen Harper: How I Sexually Assaulted the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada and Where It Got Me, a fictional piece inspired by my work at Xtra covering last year's election. FSH is playing as part of the Young Creators Unit presentations, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 6:30pm, and makes a great beginning to a Valentine's date. Tickets are free for those under 25.
POSTED BY Rob Salerno AT 9:53 PM

Fred, just imagine that Conservatives gave Canadian taxpayers money for that festival and Michael Innatieff traveled to Montreal and went to see the show mentioned above. Now imagine footage of Ignatieff and other Liberanos laughing at Rob Salerno's performance.

I can assure you that Conservatives would look very stupid.

Is that what you want??

I wouldn't be surprised if your anonymous is none other than Treb, or certainly one of his cronies, who posts pearls of wisdom such as the following at the discussion at Chuckercanuck's site on the same issue:

treb says:

"If god had wanted your ass hole to be filled with a penis,he would have given us another shit hole. Withdraw penis from ass and place in mouth, then give a big kiss to each other. And we wonder where all the disease comes from. You want a GAY parade pay for it yourself, and have it in your basement.Your parades are not something that the public should have to watch or put up with."

Quite a crew we have who hang around the fringes of the Conservative Party. It gets quite tedious having to answer to every yob and yahoo who seeks a forum to vent his hatred and frustration to the world.

Don't be afraid to voice your criticism, your views do matter.

Social conservatives won't be around for very long - they're only human and will die out before long. The future, as always, belongs to the next generation, and they happen to like gay people and racial diversity.

Social conservatives will never run or control Canada. That's a fact. Gay marriage will always exist here, marijuana will be held on a status with alcohol in our major MTV cities, and women will always be more and more equal.

Scott Brison was the first openly gay conservative MP.
There was also at least one openly Gay conservative candidate over somewhere in BC, in the last election.

I could be wrong though.

In any case, I could care less if someone is gay or not so long as they don't flaunt it in peoples faces or be lewd about it. Which goes the same regarless of sex, gender or sexual orientation.

Deep down I may have some social conservative values or preferences but I'm more libertarian in regards to the perspectives of others and how they chose to live.

I see them as more personal choices, with their own set of consequences that don't concern me personally other then the general human well-fare of those individuals since, no matter which way you slice it-they are all still people.

I don't see it as a matter for anyone person to make themselves up to be a judge against them as thats not their place. If a person is religious then they should leave things for God to judge as it really isn't any of their business.

In my mind, I place being a moderate [of anything] ahead of whether someone is straight or gay so long as they too respect the person's personal boundaries.

You can still be this way while remaining a conservative... which is a spectrum of thought with many varibables, it is not a "cliche".

"3. Social Conservatives are willing to accept you in CPC as long as you leave your sexual orientation at the door" -anon @(5:15 PM)

Rather, You should consider checking that group-think mentiality at the door. However I do personally agree with #'s 4 and 6 of that comment. I only hope he/she was cool headed when he typed it. It wouldn't help a person to be requesting such things while slaming their fist into a table. Consider using a little more tact in your approach?

There may be groups of so-cons in the party, but its really the moderates from various sides that run it and have the final say.

You may like to speak loudly on the subject but that doesn't make you much of a policy/decsion maker in my books.

When I vote Conservative I don't vote towards anyone lifestyle but for good governance and competentcy.

If you feel your social conservative values are at threat then theres either something wrong with or how you choose to implament them into your own life.

The lives of others are theirs to lead and shouldn't be any of your buisness.

I'll tell you straight up that I do happen to find the gay pride parade repulsive but can say the same of Mardi Gras celebrations, or what have you.. So what to do? Tune it out and not dwell on such things as they don't deserve my time.

I don't exactly look up to people who wish to participate in such things but their choice and they also shouldn't force me to think otherwise or expect to.

I don't see why the pride parade needs tax payer money, and should perhaps be phased out to an extent and left to private sponsers who wish to support such things.

I do support gay rights in the sense that they are people too and shouldn't have to worry about their personal safety.

That all aside.

Fred (is his name?) runs an excellent blog here, I find it very resouceful and read it often as I can. Should stay on bloging tories.

Just wish your site's search function wasn't so crap.
Or maybe I'm using it wrong.

Fred, I have congradulated you many times on your terrific postings on international matters, in particularly those dealing with N. Korea & Iran.

However, I find your remarks about social conservatives to be upsetting.

Myself, as a so-con I've decided to sit out the next election unless (unlikely) the CHP runs a candidate in my riding.

Tolerance in Canada only runs one way. If you dare to disagree with a member of one of the "favoured groups" -- homosexuals currently being the MOST favoured then you are instantly attacked.

Many of these attacks have been coming from so-called "red-tories" and self described libertarians.

No problem. I don't plan on voting the next time around and I hope that other so-cons who are sick of this nonsense come to the same decision. We don't have the numbers to give the CPC a majority. But I'll wager we DO have the numbers to DENY them a majority or even a government.

If the CPC wins or LIberals, who cares? Either way I'm ruled by people who hold my beliefs (and therefore me) in deepest scorn.

If you can gain a government WITHOUT our votes hey! Power to you! If not, oh well sux 2 B U

Quite an interesting picture you paint dupmar, that of an old fart who gets laid only if and when he brings to Canada another Filipino wife found on the Internet. Picture of an old fart who gets dumped by his "new" Filipino wife as soon as she gets her landed immigrant papers.
With such difficulties in getting laid it is no wonder that you hang out on blogs whenever you take a break from visiting porn sites.
