The EU looks ridiculous...
They pick a complete novice to be their foreign affairs minister...
The appointment as a little-known peer to become Europe's first "foreign minister" stunned and dismayed many in Westminster today, prompting a barrage of briefing against Britain's most senior female politician. But, then Hillary Clinton became Secretary of State...
Gordon Brown looks likely to draw little credit from his Labour colleagues for installing Baroness Ashton of Upholland, the EU trade commissioner who has never held elected office, into the post of High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security.
"To think that we wanted Blair and we ended up with Cathy Ashton. It's such an indictment of Gordon," said one member of the government hours after the appointment was announced.
Lady Ashton emerged from the pack after European Socialist leaders confirmed their veto of Tony Blair but said that Britain could have the second job instead. As part of the horse trading Herman Van Rumpoy, the centre right's choice to be president, was given a virtual clear run once leaders sat down for dinner last night.
Speaking publicly for the first time this morning, she acknowledged that she was yet to establish her credentials for the job.
"Over the next few months and years I aim to show that I am the best person for the job," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"I think for quite a few people they would say that I am the best person for the job and I was chosen because I am, but I absolutely recognise there are a number of candidates around, all of whom would have been extremely good, extremely able.
"I hope that my particular set of skills will show that in the end I am the best choice."
However her conciliatory tone did not prevent a welter of stories about her career as a loyal Labour peer.
According to one source, one of her first acts after becoming Labour leader in the Lords was to lock the door between her new office and the Chief Whip.

Very few wanted here wanted Blair, how could he President of Europe when he was removed by his own party in his own country? I still look forward to the day Blair is prosecuted for the Iraq War.
I say well done for picking such a non-entity who has no history of bending over for America who we now want to compete with. It also shows we have overcome our homophobia.
Oh, Lucy. Tony Blair is a hero - he helped get rid of one of the worst dictators ever!
The UK owes everything to the US - afterall who saved the UK`s bacon in the second world war than the Americans.
Tony Blair has proven to be one of the few truly effective communicators on the middle east in this key decade. He´s often vilified for his support of the Iraq effort, yet many feel his pragmatism and courage in the face of vehement opposition, allowed the issue to find better balance on both sides of partisanship. Over time truth should prevail. Blair is also an impressive egalitarian speaker on a stunning range of issues.
Worst dictators ever??? He wasn't even the worst dictator at that moment in time.
If he hadn't invaded Kuwait we would still be friends with him and arming him with his chemical weapons as we did throughout the 80s which was when i was screaming he was evil and we shouldn't be having anything to do with him.
I don't dispute America saved the UK in WW2, doesn't mean we have to act slavishly in its interests for the rest of time though. If that was the case America would be forever in France's debt.
Truth did prevails John. It prevailed that Blair lied about Iraqs nukes and WMD's. Very effectively.
The West did not lie about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
They knew that Saddam had them because they gave them to him to obliterate the Iranians.
I suspect they are buried in the desert or now belong to the Syrians.
But hey, that is just my theory.
YMMV.
