Petraeus says troops don't mind gays.....
No need to wait...time to get rid of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'...
The U.S. commander overseeing troops in Iraq and Afghanistan says he's not sure that troops in the field care about the sexual orientation of fellow service members.
Gen. David Petraeus says he's served alongside gays and lesbians, and what matters are someone's skills and smarts.

That's his opinion, and he is entitled to it. But before changing policy, how about surveying the troops themselves to see what *their* opinion is? This isn't an issue you can force...it has to happen at its own pace...
Nothing will change if you pander to prejudice.
When troops see gays as good effective soldiers they'll be convinced.
gays have always been effective soldiers...just as good as straights....
Prohibition makes it a security issue, there should be no rule with respect to sexual orientation. And no, the troops out there today are the MTV generation, they don't care about sexuality. The few that do just need to grow up.

But forcing the issue will get people killed. We're talking about combat zones here, remember?

According to?...
(I know some cops and firemen who would disagree)

Ah, there it is. The implication that anyone who disagrees with you must be immature. Or stupid. Or a redneck. Or just 'scared' of homosexuals...etc...etc...

Agreed. But that's not the problem here.
