Turkish Minister wants to cure homosexuality.....

I always knew the Turks had the cure...
A political controversy has erupted in Turkey after a minister described homosexuality as a "disease" that can and should be cured. The comment provoked a strong reaction from the country's gay and lesbian movement.

Turkey's Islamic-rooted government has frequently been criticized in the past by human rights groups over its treatment of the country's gay community. But now a Turkish gay rights group has asked prosecutors to charge Family Affairs Minister, Aliye Selma Kavaf, for what they called her derogatory comments about homosexuality.

The complaint, by the LAMBDA Association, charges that Kavaf's remarks in a newspaper interview were "an insult, incitement to crime and incitement to enmity and hate" - crimes which, in Turkey, are punishable by up to five years in jail. Kavaf had said that she believed homosexuality was a "biological disorder, a disease."

"I think it should be treated," she was quoted as saying.

I'm not getting it.. if a country is Islamic and some gays there don't like it, then they have to throw out their national religion? Why don't they just emmigrate to Israel then? (real conservative)

Turkey is supposed to be a secular democracy, thanks to its father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a man who Turks should worship for all that he did to modernize not only the country, but the minds of Turks, but now we see in the increasing radicalized Islamic world, a push in Turkey toward desecularization. Erdogan and Gul, who married his first cousin when she was 15 and he was 30, are preying on religious sheep masses and leading the country toward an Islamic state. What is happening in Turkey these days is very sad and an insult to Ataturk, perhaps one of the greatest men of the 20th century. Turkey under Erdogan and Gul is undergoing mass psychosis and regression. As they have now arrested many of the country's top military officers, who in the past, were the bulwarks of the Republic, one wonders if there are any brave Turks left, or if, as a group, they are willing to bow to a theo-political religion with a fatalistic world view. Erdogan's call for Turks NOT to assimilate into the Western countries into which they have emigrated, is a call to holy war and an incredibly ignorant and uncivilized act. I hope the Turks can wake up from the nightmare of religious fundamentalism that will only continue regression.

Turkey has been a secular democracy since Attaturk...in the last few years however, people in Turkey have started to vote for islamic fundamentalist parties and candidates.
The dominant religion in Turkey is islam and there is where the anti gay attitudes come from.
All other religions have pretty much been wiped out from Turkey as well as from any other islamic country.
I have a few muslim neighbours and because of them i have to hide my sexual orientation.
If they knew i was gay they would probably kill me or make my life miserable...and i live in Chicago,USA not in the Middle East.
Chicago is a liberal city, but liberals are ready to throw the gay community under the bus if they had to chose between gays and muslims.
The sheer violence and fanaticism of the muslims are making liberals very very scared.

It just goes to show that liberals are scared fools, who'll throw gays under a bus when intimidated by some brown skinned bully.

They've got no morality or backbone.

Just another reason why Turkey must never be allowed to join the EU.

Sure, a little, tiny, bit of it is in Europe, but most of it is not.

Its culture and outlook is distinctively NON-European.

haiyaaa... only silly people became Muslim since Islam is the only religion which fights against everything and everyone, even against Muslim of different sect.
They are so stupid that they denounced the cultures and traditions of their forebears.
Hence Turkey and Muslims for that matters should never allowed to join EU or any civilize countries unless you like become backwards like them

Anonymous talked about how he has to hide his homosexuality in the USA because of Muslim neighbours. Perhaps then, he may consider attempting to talk to gay organizations in the US and helping them realign their political orientation.

It seems to me that most gay organizations and publications are much more interested in bashing anything perceived to be not far-left wing and glorifying the multicultural utopia to notice that the most tolerant one to gay people on earth today, is the secular liberal democracies of the western world.

For the true definition and manifestation of conservative, please see Saudi Arabia and other Islamic states and as we see, even neighbourhoods now.

The same goes for women's groups.
Ladies, you have bigger issues than whether or not the toilet seat is left up or down.

The issue for gay groups is existential, as well as Jewish groups and other groups traditionally aligned with the far left. The time for serious analysis is now. Perhaps it has already passed.

Turkey is a secular democracy, with an Islamic-leaning government.
Sort of like of PQ government in Quebec city, but forced to operate within the confines of the Canadian political system and constitution.

Gay and lesbian groups would not be making complaints and presenting legal or political challenges to a government minister in an "islamic republic", they would fear to admit to their own existence for the consequences of such an act.

Turkey might be a secular democracy, with a Muslim majority population, but it is clearly starting to embrace a less secular and more conservative agenda.
