The spread of increasingly sophisticated rockets - many fitted with precision guidance systems - along Israel's borders poses the biggest immediate risk to that nation's security, Andrew Shapiro, assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs, said July 16.

"Ever-evolving technology" that often ends up in the hands of Hezbollah and Hamas makes it harder for Israeli officials to keep their nation safe from attacks, Shapiro said. Those groups are increasingly able to field rockets that are more precise and able to cover greater distances, he added.

But even "crude" rockets put Israelis living along its borders at risk, Shaprio said during prepared remarks at the Brookings Institution in Washington. The advanced rockets mean U.S.-Israeli security cooperation is more important as ever. He said the Obama administration "stands shoulder-to-shoulder" with Israel.
