Should government do 'applied gender budget analysis'?
There was a small item in the Ottawa Citizen today about the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives complaining that the government is not responsive to women. How's this for a quote from Isabelle Bakker, professor of political science at York University?
Applied gender budget analysis is not simply a technical exercise, but a more long-term process that require government officials to think about the economy in new ways that include the unpaid sector where much of women's time and efforts are concentrated.Unfortunately, right now ever government department undergoes a gender analysis.
I believe governments should be equally concerned about men and women, and as such, these attempts to single out the needs of women only end up hurting men. But, it won't be long before business schools start offering courses in "applied gender budget analysis."
