I don't understand Stephen Harper. Now, is the time for leadership! If he truly believes this government should fall, then he should introduce a non-confidence motion. Who cares about Jack Layton???? How on the earth can the Conservative claim the right to lead, yet they defer to Layton? Stephen...please, it's time!

Best to let the media (and the Canadian public) blame Jack for the "Christmas" election.

I agree that Stephen Harper should demonstrate leadership and not be afraid to push for the Liberals defeat.
Yet, don't you think that he got burned the last time when Jacko pulled the rug out from under him by cozying up to Paul and that Stephen is right to be leery of NDP promises? I think Stephen is showing that he understands the risks of getting into bed with a guy like Jacko who just may have another agenda up his sleeve. Kudos to Stephen for not letting the NDP push the CPC around...
Anyway, Steve is right. Let Jacko take the blame for ruining Christmas.

I doubt that Mr. Harper's (and Mr. Duceppe's) decision has anything to do with Christmas or Hanukkah or Eide or Winter Solstice. Last Spring, Mr. Harper was crucified by the media for "playing games" trying to bring the government down. They complained he was no leader, but only hungry for personal power! Mr. Layton (and Chuck Cadman)sabotaged the efforts of the Conservatives to do the "right" thing . The Liberals labelled the Conservatives as Separatists for cooperating with the Bloc. Mr. Layton was touted as the only politician trying to get things done - yet Jack-in-the-Box proved to be the reason the Liberals survived. The deal-with-the-devil for his own political reputation. (Jack has historically been known as a grand-stander, even as a Toronto City politician). Let Jack finish what he started. He knows he'll be supported by the Mr. Harper and Mr. Duceppe if he follows through. They can't feel the same confidence in Jack as supporter based on experience. Mr. Harper is showing strong leadership and deserves respect, and the faith of Canadians.
As an economist, Harper can probably do math.
Short of a bad batch of seafood linguini in the Parliamentary cafeteria sending a lot of people home sick, 99 Conservative MPs can't run this through a 308 member legislature.
To do it, he will need votes from both the Bloc and the NDP.
So it doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense to say "Who cares about Jack Layton!" when Jacko's support is crucial to passing this non-confidence motion.
What's the big deal with Harper and the CPC not doing anything to bring the government down at this time? I thought parliament wasn't sitting this week. How could Harper do anything to bring the government down this week anyway?
Once again it seems the Ottawa press gallery is making a lot to do about nothing when it comes to the CPC.

They are indeed in session this week. The opposition days have been put off until Nov 15th, so the opposition cannot bring up a non-confidence vote until at least that date. Nov 15th may also be a Conservative opposition day, so maybe that is why they are saying a later date -- they are waiting for an NDP opposition day where the NDP get to set/add to the agenda. I am guessing on that last point.
