Things are improving - fewer cars were burned on Saturday night.

French leaders seemed powerless Saturday night to quell the worst civil unrest in decades as clashes between Muslim immigrants and police escalated in rough Paris housing projects and spread ominously to other major regions.

The 10 consecutive nights of riots have shaken the government to its core and opened a new front in the increasingly violent rupture between Muslims and non-Muslims in Western Europe.

Thousands of cars have been torched and hundreds of businesses have been burned, but more than 250 arrests Saturday night did little to quell the violence.

The violence spread from the suburbs to the capital overnight Saturday, with police saying early today that 13 cars were burned, the Associated Press reported.

Overall, at least 607 vehicles were burned, including those in Paris, said Patrick Hamon, spokesman for the national police.
