Unbelievable claims...

This report from the UK is so ridiculous as to be laughable.
Women are suffering "crisis levels" of rape, domestic violence, sex abuse and harassment, campaigners say. Protesters took their demands for action to Downing Street yesterday and handed in a dossier warning that violence affected women of all backgrounds in every part of the country. They said almost half of women had been hit by their partner, had suffered a sexual attack or had been stalked. And they accused ministers of being in disarray over the problem and lacking a co-ordinated approach to combatting violence.
Half of all women? Please give me a break. We know that both sexes suffer from an equal amount of physical abuse...and we know that about three-quarters of murder victims are men. Doesn't violence against men count too?

Well, I'm not laughing.

Here are some Canadian statistics (from: http://www.metrac.org/new/stat_sex.htm)

51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual or physical violence. Close to 60% of these women have survived more than one incident of violence. (Statistics Canada, 1993, "Violence Against Women Survey", The Daily, 18 November, p. 1, 3)

62% of the victims who reported being sexually assaulted in 1998 were under the age of 18. (Statistics Canada, Juristat, Vol. 19, No. 9)

In 2000, women made up the vast majority of victims of sexual assault (86%) and other types of sexual offences (78%). (Statistics Canada, 2001, Family Violence in Canada: A Statistical Profile, 2001).

I can't really comment further. I'm too angry at this post to stay rational and polite, so it's best I don't say anything further at all.

What's so ridiculous to be laughable is that you think that violence against women isn't a problem.

Whether or not your statistic is true about most victims of violence being men, or that levels of violence against men and womena are "equal," it's a red herring.

I think you'd have to agree that the pattern of violence against women (largely man against woman) is different from violence against men (largely man against man). Why are you so shocked that a coalition called End Violence Against Women would call attention to the issue?

I never understand the argument, "Do not pay attention to problem X, because Y is also a problem."

Oh wait, you're troll baiting, aren't you?

Violence is a problem....but violence against men and women is the problem. We need to pay attention to both...not just one.

If I said that we should poo-poo violence against blacks because it's perpetrated by blacks, you would say that's crazy. So, when women say that only violence against women should be examined because a large majority is committed by men (and a small group of men), it is equally absurd.
