Israel is singled out once again....

The new UN Human Rights Council is off to a really bad start....but is anybody surprised?
The new UN Human Rights Council voted Friday to make a review of alleged human rights abuses by Israel a permanent feature of every council session.

The resolution, which was sponsored by Islamic countries, was passed by a vote of 29-12, with five abstentions. It effectively revives a practice of the UN's dissolved Human Rights Commission, which also reviewed alleged Israeli abuses every time it met.

Israel protested Friday's vote, calling it a perpetuation of "the old infamous habits" of the widely discredited commission.

The resolution requires UN investigators to report at each council session "on the Israeli human rights violations in occupied Palestine."

The resolution also said the council "decides to undertake substantive consideration of the human rights violations and implications of the Israeli occupation of Palestine and other occupied Arab territories at its next session and to incorporate that issue in its following sessions."

One of the United States' main criticisms of the 53-nation Human Rights Commission that was replaced this year by the council was that it spent one week of its annual six-week session criticizing Israel and made other frequent attacks on the Jewish state.

"Voting in favor of this draft resolution will lead you directly to the old infamous habits of the commission," Israeli Ambassador Itzhak Levanon told the council. "Voting yes essentially means that no lessons have been drawn. It means that there is no fresh beginning."

Besides Arab and other Muslim countries, "yes" votes were cast by African nations, Brazil, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Russia and Sri Lanka. Canada and European Union members on the council voted against it.

it constantly amazes me how so many see the actions of israel through rose coloured glasses. israel was created in 1948 after an immense propaganda campain sponsored by the u.s.a. and the world zionist movement resulting in the theft of palestinian land and a terror campain by zionist gangs to evict the indigenous population. israel has continued the campain of terror in palestine by imprisoning, torturing ,murdering and starving palestinians of life's necessities, defying u.n. resolutions. israel refined torture methods to the point that they are exporting their "expertise" to countries like the u.s.a. (guantanamo) etc. this has been going on for decades and you still see fit to defend this abonination called israel? perhaps if you watched the news which show daily israeli atrocities you may change your mind in supporting israel.

Israel was created in 1948 as a result of a serious investigation by the United Nations. They decided that partition of the land between the Jews and the Arabs was the best way to move forward. Even the Soviet Union supported the creation of Israel.

Everything is your post is untrue. It's unfortunate that you have not read any history of the middle east - you seem to rely upon ridiculous charges that have no proof.

There was no terror campaign to evict the indigenous population. First, much of the indigenous population was jewish - in fact, Jerusalem had been majority jewish since the mid 1800s. Most of the indigenous arabs left on their own free will - in Haifa, the Jews pleaded with the Arabs to stay. But, Arab leaders felt that they would quickly destroy the jewish state and that they could return home shortly. What an incredible miscalculation.

The real misery in the Middle East is the fact that palestinians are still held in refugee camps. No one - including the Palestinian leadership - will resettle them.

Arabs treat Palestinians like dirt and have done their very best to ensure Palestinians would always be a thorn in Israel's side. Arabs truly hate Palestinians, no one else has shown that much disregard for them.

The United Nations? I never voted for Canada's representative, nor did I vote for Kofi Annan. So to hell with that cabal of dictators - the only thing they have managed to do is steal our money.

Gayandnotright should look beyond his zionist indoctrinators.Have you ever heard of the Stern Gang and their super terrorist Menachem Begin, whose expertise in terrorism qualified him to be elected prime minister of zionist israel? The serious investigation by the U.N. also concluded that israel should get the hell out of the stolen Palestinian lands. But twisting the truth and disregard for the rights of others is israel's hallmark.

anonymous cannot get any of his facts right. Menachem Begin was not a membrer of the Stern Gang; The Stern Gang was an off-shoot from the Irgun.

The UN did not say that Israel should "get the hell out of stolen Palestinian land." They said Palestine should be partitioned - and the Jews wholeheartedly accepted - the Arabs then declared war.
