Passport Photos can't upset muslims...

This photo was rejected in the UK because it might upset muslims.
A five-year-old girl's passport application was rejected because her photograph showed her bare shoulders.

Hannah Edwards's mother, Jane, was told that the exposed skin might be considered offensive in a Muslim country.

The photograph was taken at a photo-booth at a local post office for a family trip to the south of France.

Because of the way the camera was set up, the picture came out showing Hannah's shoulders.

The family had it signed and presented it at a post office with the completed form but were told that it would not be accepted by the Passport Office.

As someone who's lived in a few Middle East countries, I completely agree with their stance. We may be upset when the photo gets rejected, but that's nothing compared to the problems that arise when you're thrown in jail in another country for what seems like a trivial offence.

In the 6 years I lived in the middle east, I saw:

1) A man thrown in jail because he possessed an illegal bottle of alcohol when his wife died. He was raped every night by his cellmate for 3 years before he was finally gotten out.

2) A man's passport was frozen and later he was thrown in jail because the government owed him money for work completed. It took the Canadian government 18 months before they started to do anything, because Chretien's MPs were fighting amongst themselves over who could take this to the big guy.

3) A woman was kidnapped and raped by 3 Nationals. Upon reporting the crime to the police, she and her family were promptly deported. Apparently, she was asking for it because her hair wasn't covered.

I was just a child at the time. We were constantly warned never to speak ill of the Shiek or government. We lived in a guarded complex my parents wouldn't let us leave.

Incidentally, the country was the United Arab Emirates, considered one of the most progressive countries in the Middle East.

So when they warn you that you can get in serious trouble in an Islamic country due to your passport photo, take them seriously. Rights and freedoms don't count for much when you're in their custody and can't contact your embassy.

The British meekly surrender to Islam and fascism - what a change from sixty years ago when they fought against the fascists.

The British want to join the rest of the Eurabians and live according to how Islamic clerics feel they should live at any given moment - meaning that they seem to even reject their own creation of common law. Very sad and pathetic, even if the BBC seems very pleased by it all.

Travelling to the uncivilized countries in the middle east that are run by the savages is just not worth it, those places should be left to the Muslims who are quite happy to enslave and/or murder each other.

Israel is the only country in the middle east where the average Westerner would be safe, because unlike their neighbours they are highly civilized.

I'm with Luke on this.

I think the story is not being understood. The issue as I understood it wasn't that "UK passports must not offend Muslims", it was that "This child/family might not be safe in Islamic countries". If I misunderstood the story, please do correct me.

This has nothing to do with standing up to fascism - the UK has no say what other countries make up for policies.

It's an ugly, ugly happening, no doubt and no question.
