She should be fired....

Bus drivers should have no say about the ads on their buses.
A bus driver who says homosexuality is against her religion will be allowed to refuse to get behind the wheel of vehicles displaying gay ads.

Minneapolis-St Paul Metro Transit agreed to the demand by driver despite objections from her union according to an internal transit authority memo obtained by the Star Tribune newspaper.

The controversy arose after the authority accepted an ad from local LGBT magazine Lavender. The ad shows a photo of a young man and carries the slogan "Unleash Your Inner Gay."

The ad runs on about 50 city buses.

When the driver objected the companied issued a memo to dispatchers instructing them not to assign the driver, identified only by her employee number, to any of the buses running the ad "under any circumstances" the Star Tribune reports.

She has a right to this just like you would be offended by an anti-gay ad.

Please!

The bus driver does not have "the right" to not drive the bus. The ad is just an ad.

If she refuses to drive the bus because of the ad she should be suspended. The suspension should include discussions with her union and employer. If after some "sober second thought" she is still off-side, she loses her job, period!

This is no different to any ads. Let's say I am a bus driver and I am an alcoholic, having battled my whole life. Perhaps my parents were also alcoholics. Am I allowed to refuse to drive a bus with liqour ads? How about the same brand that use to be my favorite? The answer is clearly no. Same with any ad.

Being offended by an ad that is legal and not considered offensive by society as a whole is not a reason to get special rights.

She should be fired.

cheers,

Tomm

This employee should take up company advertising policies with the company, find another job, or pluck out her eyes. Simple.

Would you still think she should be fired if she refused to drive the bus because the ad was in defence of traditional marriage and quoted the bible as saying homosexuality was a sin?

Methinks not. Funny, no?

I would say she should drive the bus no matter the ads on it. Whether the ad is offensive is up to the Transit, and possibly other bodies, but not the drivers. If someone wants to spend their money trying to convince everyone that traditional marriage is fantastic, who cares?

The fact the ad is on her bus is not grounds for refusing to do her job, because the ads have nothing to do with her job. It's very different than someone being asked, as part of their job, to actively undertake an activity which offends their religion - and even then, so long as the terms of the job are known before the job is accepted, they have no right to certain terms.

Fred, the issue isn't the bus driver or the ad. The real problem is Minneapolis-St Paul set a precedent by allowing [Muslim] cabbies to refuse fares if the fares were carrying alcohol. It being against their fragile religion and all. Good for the goose...
