More on the Great Global Warming Swindle...

The producer of the show responds to criticism...
The remarkable thing is not that I was attacked. But that the attacks have been so feeble. The ice-core data was the jewel in the global-warming crown, cited again and again as evidence that carbon dioxide 'drives' the earth's climate. In fact, as its advocates have been forced to admit, the ice-core data says the opposite. Temperature change always precedes changes in CO2 by several hundred years. Temperature drives CO2, not the other way round. The global-warmers do not deny this. They cannot.

During the post-war economic boom, while industrial emissions of CO2 went up, the temperature went down (hence the great global-cooling scare in the 1970s). Why? They say maybe the cooling was caused by SO2 (sulphur dioxide) produced by industry. But they say it mumbling under their breath, because they know it makes no sense. Thanks to China and the rest, SO2 levels are far, far higher now than they were back then. Why isn't it perishing cold?

Too many journalists and scientists have built their careers on the global-warming alarm. Certain newspapers have staked their reputation on it. The death of this theory will be painful and ugly. But it will die. Because it is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Absolutely right. Poor Al will be forced to admit he was wrong at some point or be buried by history as just one of those crackpots. David Suzuki will no doubt retreat back to the loving arms of the CBC and count his millions into old age. In the meantime well intentioned folks will spend their hard earned dollars to reduce their "carbon footprint" based on junk science. What a world we live in!

Global warming marketing will simply be buried and overshadowed by THE NEXT BIG SCARE!

No mea culpas will ever be issued by the powers that be...

Climate modelling is hugely complicated and very difficult, so no doubt details of the theory will change over the years. But that doesn't mean Martin Durkin is necessarily correct in his criticisms.

As for the ice-core data, it's not a simple case of either Temperature drives CO2 or CO2 drives Temperature, as Durkin claims. Rather, Temperature and CO2 both affect each other, and many other factors also affect climate. (Including solar, of course.) There is no doubt, though, that CO2 acts as a "greenhouse gas"; this is basic physics. The best current theory is that CO2 does not initiate the warmings seen in the ice-core data, but acts as an amplifier once they are underway. See What does the lag of CO2 behind temperature in ice cores tell us about global warming? for more details.

On sulphate aerosol levels, I don't believe it's true that these are "far, far higher now than they were back then." I'd like to see Durkin cite his source. Also, the climatic impact of aerosols is less well understood than that of greenhouse gases.
