Nuclear power is essential....

If governments really want to curb CO2 emissions...then nuclear is the only option...
Ministers will claim this week that a new generation of nuclear power stations is the only effective way to curb greenhouse gas emissions. John Hutton, the energy secretary, will tell MPs Britain cannot hit its targets solely through energy efficiency and renewable technology such as wind and wave power.

Hutton said this weekend: “The idea that Britain can meet its growing power needs through renewable energy and greater efficiency is nonsense.”

And not just for CO2 emmissions... A greater percentage of power from nuclear sources will improve air pollution in general.

I'm waiting for this issue to hit Canada and the Conservatives. For it is inevitable that a nuclear plant will have to be built in Alberta in the oil sands area. Too much natural gas is needed to process the bitumen.

Even though the area is pretty remote, a wasteland and not on Indian land, the environmentalists will not accept a nuclear plant there.

By the way there is a great article in Harrowsmith about a huge windpower station to be built in the Eastern Townships of Quebec and the neighbours who are against it - what they don't mention is how Hydro Quebec and the government (and taxpayers!) are subsidizing these projects so they can look good.
