Michael Crichton on Environmentalism....

Michael Crichton died this week. His non-fiction essays on science were amongst my favorites.

So a political party is a religious body? Any structure with a leader and beliefs that changes the way people act, behave and form values is a religious organization?

I think he's talking out of his ass about anthropology considering environmentalism a religion. It sounds like someone who desperately wants to fit his square peg in a round hole, so he's ignoring the details (i.e., shaving the edges, to continue the metaphor) to match his idea to the scholarship.

As for the rest of his beliefs, he seems to have built a foundation on his caricature of environmentalism, and this foundation doesn't allow him to actually get up to his elbows in the academic work involved to actually contribute to the field. He is the opposing side's answer to Gore. Although he has some scientific background, he doesn't have any connection to the research beyond his intuition about science. I haven't seen any papers from Crichton recently in any of the journals.

It's actually somewhat humourous that the deniers latch onto him as their front-man.

He did write some entertaining fiction though. I'm not really sure how that improves his credentials when it comes to commenting on real science.
