A new, virulent and even "lethal" anti-Semitism is sweeping the globe and putting the lives of both Jews and non-Jews at risk, a leading human rights lawyer will argue this week.
At a confence in London of 100 parliamentarians from 40 countries, Irwin Cotler, a human rights lawyer from Canada who was once counsel to Nelson Mandela, will argue that the world is seeing a return to the vicious anti-Semitism that culminated in the Nazi Holocaust and the death of six million Jews.
In a paper seen by The Times to be presented at the conference tomorrow, Mr Colter says the level of anti-Semitism is "without parallel or precedent since the end of the Second World War."
He says there is a "new anti-Jewishness" that overlaps with classical anti-Semitism. Where traditional anti-Semitism is the assault on the rights of Jews to live as equal members of whatever host society they inhabit, the new anti-Semitism involves the discrimination against the right of the Jewish people to live as an equal member of the family of nations.
The focus is on Israel as totemic of the entire Jewish people. And whereas in the past the goal of anti-Semites was to rid the world of Jews, now it is to rid the world of the state of Israel, he says.
He says Israel is not above the law and must be held accountable for any violations of international law or human rights. "The Jewish people are not entitled to any privileged protection or preference because of the particularity of Jewish suffering."
But he says that extremist attacks on Israel are still anti-Semitic. He cites the parading in the streets of Teheran of a Shihab-3 missile draped in the emblem ‘Wipe Israel off the Map' and the statement by Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar proclaims that, 'before Israel dies, it must be humiliated and degraded'."
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has also said that “If all the Jews were gathered in Israel it would be easier to kill them all at the same time”.
Nasrallah has also said: "If we searched the entire world for a person more cowardly, despicable, weak and feeble in psyche, mind, ideology and religion, we would not find anyone like the Jew. Notice, I do not say the Israeli."

Sadly, swooning over the likes of Hamas and Hezbollah has become the "nouveau chic" in leftist circles and nowadays they rule the roost in Western countries. I doubt his presentation will carry any weight or media coverage in the UK as it is now a defacto Islamic state. In fact I am surprised he is not banned like Wilders for "inciting civil unrest".
And through all the last two months of open anti-semitism in Canada, at rallies with Hamas and Hezbollah flags, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has remained silent.
Is it any wonder that his past due date has come?
Harper may have been silent as their has been no specific issue on which he should have given a statement IMO. However its notewrothy that Canada under Harper is the ONLY nation which has openly stated it will not attend Durban II. This itself is a very powerful indicator of policy. As we have a government which would appear to perhaps be the only one with the moral courage to declare it's intentions to not attend, I would be reluctant to dump on his government for inaction. What would you have him do Anonymous?
The shot at Harper is cheap and wrong.
There is no Western government in the world right now that supports Israel more reliably than Canada.
And I doubt it's winning him a ton of votes either.
In my work as a father's and men's rights activist and in daily contact with others across the world I receive much mail and I am drawn to many weblinks. Some of what I see and which has been sent to me has been deeply disturbing. I have been watching this anti-Israel, anti-Jew rhetoric growing to the point where I am deeply concerned. At least one in 4 or 5 people has some conspiracy theory in mind related to the Jews. If its not the Jews being behind 911 then its the Jews and the "international bankers" behind the financial crisis. It matters not that these conspiracy theories have long ago been disproven and are ridiculous in the extreme, as they believe it absolutely. Of even more concern is that some of these people are in other matters seemingly intelligent and well-rounded. The mind boggles but its serious.
I also believe strongly that the anti-Semitic feeling has reached a point equal to, or maybe even higher than, the point it reached just prior to the Second World War.
What bothers me the most however is I have been voicing my concerns on this to Jewish friends and asking what can be done to combat this madness and I have been getting nothing back. What are we all going to do to stop this madness? Ti me its not going to get any better on its own and we have to do something.
