Miller is just plain wrong - and he is just pandering here...
Calling it an issue close to his heart as the child of an immigrant single mother, Mayor David Miller tonight threw his support behind a movement to extend the right to vote in Toronto municipal elections to non-citizens.This may be close to his socialist heart, but I don't think Canadians want non-citizens to vote. There needs to be a huge carrot on the road to citizenship, and that is voting.
Politically enfranchising newcomers who reside in the city but have not yet attained their citizenship would be a first in Canada but not the world.
“It’s my view that those people who have chosen to make Toronto their home and live here permanently should have the right to vote in municipal elections in exactly the same way as Canadian citizens,” the Mayor said to applause from some 200 people attending a city-organized panel discussion on the topic that was held in the council chambers at City Hall this evening.
“From my perspective you can’t be an inclusive and open government unless all of the residents have an ability to choose that government.”

I might just be a little confused, but isn't the right to vote a citizen's right?
We don't give votes to those who are visiting or to those who come here to work for a few years. Are we going to give voting privileges next to the Ambassadors of foreign countries because they live in Toronto on an indefinite basis?
Miller never ceases to surprise me how out of touch with reason he is. If people are coming here to live permanently, they will get themselves a citizenship. Then they can vote. That's the REASON why it is deemed a citizen's right. It's pretty easy to understand for me.
After all, what's the point of citizenship if the most important rights and privileges of a society are given to anybody and everybody who comes in the country?
Maybe it's ironic that the word verification I had to use to post this comment is: phooe... one letter away from phooey.

Thank God elections Canada FINALLY started asking for proof of citizenship and photo ID in the last BC Provincial election and it will now be standard practice in the Fedral ones... no more collecting those cards at apartment buildings and bussing your supporters from poll to bloody poll tto Vote early and Vote often for any political party... not naming names of who spawned the saying...but think criminals and Lefty's
Now that Miller is in a position of power, he is out to avenge his mother's outrage at having to prove citizenship. WOW whatever happened to serving the people not personal vendettas. Cheers Fern StAlbert
So basically , we could end up with the Pro-Tamil Tiger mayor when 1000's of Tiger-Tourists arrive prior to a Mayoral race.
Once elected ,the Tourists go home .
What's the point for being a Citizen when 6.5 billion non-Canadians have the same Rights under the Charter.
Pfft... we should revoke the right to vote of every retard who voted for Miller. There should be an intelligence and non-sucking-off-the-taxpayer test to be allowed to vote, which would pretty much eliminate the NDP's core constituency of parasites.
