Building in Gilo is fine...

I have no problem with Israel building more houses in Gilo...
Residents of Gilo on Wednesday reacted with surprise and anger to news that the US administration was dismayed by a government decision to approve 900 new homes in their neighborhood, questioning the relevance of the criticism while denouncing it unequivocally.

"It's just so ridiculous," said Silva, as she walked outside her home on the neighborhood's Rehov Shabtai Hanegbi.

"Anyone who is opposed to us building in Gilo obviously doesn't know the neighborhood very well. There are more than 40,000 people living here - it could very well be a city within itself. I never even thought that Gilo was up for discussion."

Others reacted with similar surprise, but also frustration at what they said was misguided American policy in an area considered by a wide consensus of Israelis to be just another Jerusalem neighborhood.

"Since when is anyone thinking about giving Gilo away?" asked an elderly man as he waited at a bus stop. "And if we're not giving it away, why on earth can't we build here? Obama is sitting all the way over there in the White House making demands, and really, what does he know about anything?"

Ron, a grocery store owner on Rehov Zecharia, labeled the American criticism "stupid," and said he was shocked to see the question of building rights in his neighborhood thrust into the headlines.

"When I picked up the newspaper today I couldn't believe it," he said. "The location they want to build in isn't even close to any Arab homes, and it has nothing to do with peace negotiations.

"Since when was Gilo on the table?" he asked. "To be honest with you, it's all very upsetting."
Gilo was a Jewish settlement going back decades - well before the establishment of the state of Israel. Gilo lies within Jerusalem's municipal boundaries and is geographically contiguous to surrounding Jewish neighborhoods that pre-dated the Six Day War.

The arrogance is staggering and one of the reasons why Israel will continue to be the Worlds pariah until it votes in a Government who doesn't see Palestine land as its own and the Palestinians as cannon fodder. Luckily, hysterical right wing blogs like this will only expedite it. Keep it up Fred.

@ Lucy no I think Britain and Europe is becoming that "Worlds Pariah" that you speak of, like giving in to the Islamist after they attacked you is a a new low and at least Israel, Canada and the United States fights back at them and don't give in to their demands

Welcome to Chicago class/race/gender politics as applied to Israel. Israel is doing well, leading the world in many areas of high tech R&D and all around them there is massive corruption, unemployment, murder and terrorism.

Can't have that!! Nope!! The Israelis must give what they have to those around them so they can all enjoy a nice socialist utopia. Got that!!

So Muslims are allowed to have large families but Israelis are not because they will need more space.

So when was you attacked by Iraq or Afghanistan Andrew? Using your logic, the Palestnians have every right to 'fight back at them and don't give in to their demands' against Israel. Or doesn't it cut the other way?

lucy I don't live in the United States or Britain and your blog profile says you are in the United Kingdom and the last time I did check the UK did attack Iraq with the United States and please ask that to Islamic groups in the UK that attack the Tube system and buses twice and some had links to Palestinian Groups if your logic is correct going against your own country and people isn't crime in Britain? The last time I check all those people who were killed on the bus and on the Tube system were civilians and who were those Islamic groups fighting back against? but at least Britain has become slaves to Islamic terror but at least the US, Canada and Israel will never submit Islamic fascism.

Andrew, the people who attacked the Tube and Buses did it because they were angry at the Iraq/Afghan invasion. Rightly or wrongly that was their justification.
I would be interested in your proof that they had links to Palestinian groups because that has never been mentioned here so possibly you know what our media overlooked.
Do you think Britain was wrong to make peace with the IRA or should we have 'not submitted' to Irish facism? Should Britain have not submitted to the Jewish facism of the Stern gang and the Irgun?
Should we just go around blowing up terrorists or just the islamic ones?

Wow now your playing the "Jewish Fascism card? why not the American Revolution card like Stern gang and the Irgun American Revolutionaries did target British Targets and yet today you still playing the "British Targets" card and any history book would tell you that either group did not have connections with Fascist or is this another case of the British being defeated in Britain's finest hour again like back in 1776.

Also you still have not answered why fundamentalist Islam has a a lot of power in Britain like calling for Gays and lesbians to be killed, forcing people to convert to Islam, but it nice to see the religion of "peace" and their leftest idiots at work but also if my history is correct Gilo was traditionally a Jewish Neighborhood and Israel is just returning it to it "Native" population and people in Britain have a problem with returning to the Native population? WOW I bet so
