Send this lesbian back to the US....

We need to throw her out of Canada...and she needs a backbone to fight her battles in the US....
The Federal Court says the refugee board must reconsider the case of a lesbian who deserted from the U.S. army and fled to Canada.

Judge Yves de Montigny says the board erred last February when it rejected Bethany Smith's bid for refugee status. Ms. Smith says she fled the army because she was harassed and threatened by fellow soldiers over her sexual orientation.

She says she couldn't seek help from her superiors because she feared they might have been part of the harassment.

The judge said the board must reconsider her case because it unfairly dismissed evidence suggesting that gays face harsher treatment in the American military justice system.

Ms. Smith says she would fear for her life if she were deported and returned to the army.
Fear for her life...what bullshit.

I know this person doesn't represent your view, but unfortunately, this is the kind of thing that most people see when it comes to homosexuals, which is a good chunk of the reason for the animosity.

I'm not saying its right, but its a rather unfortunate fact. For the longest time, I had no idea that a homosexual would ever even consider the idea of being conservative.

I am not intending to offend you in any way. I have always wondered why LGBT people made same-sex marriage their chief "civil-rights" issue. Aren't there more important things like hate crimes, harrasment and treatment of gays in Iran than gay marriage??? And weren't the majority of gay people against the whole idea/institution of marriage until it became a political issue?

Same-sex marriage was a huge issue for gays. Why shouldn't our relationships be granted the same rights and privileges as straight relationships. But, more importantly, can you imagine the pain and suffering of not being able to visit you spouse in hospital? Or, the pain and suffering of losing an apartment after your spouse died?

Gays are normal - just like everybody else, and we just want to be treated like everybody else.

Justin, you are very, very wrong. There's only a small percentage of the populations that shows animosity. This lesbian is no different from all the straight so-called deserters from the american military. And, I say the same thing to all of them: go home.

Your statement that you "had no idea that a homosexualy would ever consider the idea of being conservative" betrays some ridiculous thinking. How could you possibly believe that your sexual orientation makes you politically think a certain way?

I have to agree. What does your sexual orientation have to do with your political stripe?

I will however mention that after reading "Raging Tory's" kill them all an let God sort 'em out post, I can assure you that he and I are conservatives of a different feather.

OK, first, calm down a second.

Then think about what the media portrays.

All most conservatives see tends to be those big gay pride marches, where the lunatic fringe of the gay community tend to get more than their fair share of say, and where they daemonize the right wing.

Don't forget, I'm only 21. My first gay friend? Age of 17 or 18. My perspective of gays was that they were almost all left wing, until I actually met a homosexual that I could sit down and have a conversation with.

I realize that it is only a small percentage of the population that shows animosity. However, that is also the most vocal part of the population, which is the problem.

I am against gay marriage in principle, but would never work to have it removed. When it was the major issue, I was in favour of civil unions, as were many social conservatives I knew. We had no problem with homosexuals being granted equal rights, but we felt that the sacred institution known as marriage needed to be protected.

Have you had a chance to read the actual judgement? Ms. Smith's circumstances aren't exactly pillow fluff:

In spite of being typically gung ho pro-military conservative American, as a gay individual, you of all people should understand this poor girl's problem.
You never suffered from persecution or hate crimes due to your sexual orientation? You never got beat up or at threatened in anyway?
Imagine this poor girl stuck in a war torn foreign war zone. Her fellow soldiers would kill her simply for her sexual orientation and it would pass as an accident or enemy attack and more than likely, case closed.
It's not like she didn't try to legally get out of duty.

I am not doubting that she had a hard life, or that she was harassed. However, she needs to go home and fight her battles in the United States.

She was a volunteer. Period. End of story.

Nobody forced her to volunteer. She didn't read her contract. She didn't know about 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell".....I read enough in the judgement to see that we should not allow her into Canada.

Have the courage to fight in the US.

"Don't ask, don't tell" should be repealed because it presents a security risk, a gay person could be compromised by foreign intelligence.

She didn't know about the policy? Hard to believe. But not our problem, deport her.

There are many reason for repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Foremost among them - gays and lesbians deserve to have the privilege to defend their country.
