This is not good news....

We need an international effort to stop the pirates...
The largest ransom ever paid to Somali pirates has been dropped onto the deck of a Greek-flagged oil tanker carrying two million barrels of oil.

The ransom delivered on Sunday is believed to be between $5.5m and $7m, according to unnamed sources interviewed by the Reuters news agency.

I was going to suggest this idea about a year ago but i held my tongue. It time to rebuild Allied navies and start convoy duties into and out of the Mid-East to protect our own shipping from piracy.

It sucks to pay for something and then to not get what you paid for. (real conservative)

If the shipping companies hire private security forces to ride their ships I am sure it would cost a lot less than the ransoms.

It will get to the point when the ships are accompanied by naval ships. Private security firms? Spoken like a real conservative.

Would of been a lot cheaper to of hire well armed security and/or escort.

Lucy, your being a bit of an idiot.

Pirates are okay, but not private security firms?
Who are automatically evil or malicious?

Those "corporate bastards"... providing a service.

Thats like demonizing someone who choses to hire a private body guard (or three) rather then rely on witness protection program and go into hiding.

Why waste tax payers money when someone can opt to hire their own protection? Much less criticize them for it.

Telling someone they're being a bit of an idiot is not childish especially when they are "being a bit of an idiot".

"Why pay for private ships when you have a navy?"

I'm sorry, those shipping companies own armed navies?

It is more rational and cost effective to rely on hired escorts and on board security than what any one government can provide.

Those who can't afford such things would could still probably choose to rely on naval ships paid for by tax payers around the would to ensure a level of order and organization.

But people who pay for alternatives shouldn't be demonized for investing in their own protection.

That ought to free up more naval ships to (as mentioned above) help others who can't help themselves.

Get it?

If the governments took a more aggressive stance against those ports and shores who harbor the pirates and stop being ineffectually diplomatic bleeding hearts than the issue would be under better control.

Rather, by not doing so, they enable the criminals and terrorists to continue with their games while the civil law abiding folks get shafted or killed.
