Why do they hate us???
A cross post from Rightchik, who is touring around Israel...
On Tuesday, the Major and I went to the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) Museum. Before you can enter you must show a passport (if you are not Israeli) and have your bags searched. The young man taking care of security (no doubt a former soldier) took a close look at our passports. We knew he had gotten to the Syrian visa stamp when he looked up.
Naturally we explained but that is when the conversation started. I told him how much I loved Israel. That I thought it was beautiful and that the people were so very friendly.
This young man who wasn't any older than my daughter looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why do they hate us?" He asked this very quietly and you could see something in his eyes that I can only describe as mourning. It was the look of loss and resignation.
I replied that it must be jealousy. He looked down at his feet, shook his head and again very quietly said he didn't think so. No malice, no anger. He was far too humble to accept that answer.
This beautiful blond boy looked up, smiled and wished me a good visit and welcome to Israel.
In these past few days I have thought of him and his question. I suppose there are a lot of "reasons" but none that make any sense. But whether you call it anti Semitism or anti Israeli, they are borne of the same evil. There are no explanations. I believe in evil. I believe in good.
As I write this I am reminded of what Geert Wilders said in today's Jerusalem Post. To paraphrase, mothers in the west sleep very well because mothers in Israel lay awake at night worrying about their children.
I have no doubt that I will keep this boy in my thoughts for the rest of my life.
