Rapes in Oslo
I'm watching Norway's TV2 all-news channel right now and they're reporting that the number of rape assaults in Oslo has doubled. In fact, there have already been twice as many rape assaults in the city so far this year as there were in all of 2010. This in a city where, as was reported in May, every rape assault in the last five years was committed by a person with a "non-Western" background. Conservative member of parliament André Oktay Dahl calls the situation "critical" and is brave enough to acknowledge that many of the perpetrators come from cultures "with a reprehensible attitude toward women."
Two rapes took place this weekend, one of them in the park outside the Royal Palace.

A somewhat selective account. From the YouTube site: "Note statistics for 'Assaults involving rape' does [sic] not include domestic- and date-rape." That must exclude a considerable number, if one goes by Canadian statistics for comparison purposes.
The actual numbers are 86 sexual assault incidents in a five-year period--about 17 a year. No incident of this nature should be minimized, of course, and the perpetrators should be caught and severely punished. But given North American statistics for rapes of all kinds, this is hardly a crime wave. Moreover, reports of the perps being "foreign-looking" fail to impress.
This sort of fear-mongering is present here in Canada with the "honour killings" meme--all of 13 cases in a nine-year period, or, in other words, .03% of all homicides and 1.6% of all female victims of domestic violence in that period.
(That stat is about to rise, I suspect, with the almost certain conviction of a family who killed four of its members recently in what was clearly an "honour killing" in three of the cases. No doubt the Islamophobes will point to a "25% rise" in such crimes, or some such nonsense.)
In any case, I think you take my point, Bruce. It's easy to cherry-pick stats to "prove" that Muslims are dangerous beasts. But they are very far from being the only beasts in the jungle.
Somehow Dr. Dawg has made the leap from "foreign looking" to Muslim. Hmmm, who has the problem?
Honor killings are not rape nor are they commited on strangers unknown to the attacker.Further, honor killings are cultural;not religious. It is completely different.
I agree with the premise that stats like this can be skewed but it may not be that far off here.
Ex;
In Ontario it was concluded that "immigrants" are at greater risk of drowning on flimsier stats than the one produced in this case.
Dr.Dawg's stat is bogus. The homicide rate in Canada would have to be close to 5 000/yr to be accurate. I suspect he/she meant 0.3%.
Not my leap. The point of the exercise was, of course, to target Muslims.
My stat is correct. In the period I referred to (a nine-year period, in fact, as I clearly stated), there were 4,836 homicides. During approximately the same period there were 13 identified "honour lkillings." Do the math.
DR DAWG.
13/4836 = 0.27%. Not the 0.03% you quoted.
I ask you to do the math.
You are wrong again and you don't even know it. Don't spew crap about stats being misleading when you cannot even check your own simple math functions. Quite embarrassing actually....
Good grief, I stand corrected. 0.27% it is. You're absolutely right.
Does it affect my point in the slightest?
You were out almost by a factor of ten and only after calling me out on my math!
No it doesn't effect your point because it is still wrong.
And yes, embarrassing to be sure. I don't usually drop decimal points. Ouch.
"it is still wrong."
How so? My point was that the number of so-called "honour killings" in Canada is a vanishingly tiny number of both the total number of homicides and the total number of female victims.
Bawer draws our attention to a sickening murder in Scotland that appears to be a homophobic hate crime. If the perp turns out to be Christian, what conclusion would you (or Bruce) draw from that?
By the way, I apologize for being snotty about your math. That one sure came back to bite me on the nethers.
