Where the Conservatives went wrong..

Here's a link to my first article in The National Post...

Like most other Canadians, what struck me about the photograph of that little boy washed up on a Turkish beach, and the revelation in the National Post that his family had been hoping to find asylum in Canada, was the way it brought home, in a very personal and vivid way, the horrific tragedy of the Syrian refugee crisis.
But instead of turning to questions about how Canada could, and should, play a much bigger role in alleviating Syrian suffering, Conservative partisans chose to spread the vilest of lies about the Kurdi family specifically and about Syrian refugees generally. The Syrian refugees are people who desperately need our help and yet Conservative activists took the opportunity to flood social media with hysteria.

One of the most bizarre conspiracy theories was based on the falsehood that one in 50 Syrian refugees is an ISIL infiltrator. Just because so many of the asylum seekers had cell phones and were well-dressed, this was supposed to prove that they weren’t refugees at all. And the disingenuous questions: Why are so many of the refugees men? Doesn’t this prove that Europe is facing a Muslim invasion? It didn’t matter that young men were the natural choice for refugee families to send into harm’s way, or that the sky-high refugee numbers were still only one-four-hundredth of the population of Europe.

It was ugly and the Conservative party is not helping matters by using the niqab issue to energize a faction of the Conservative activist base that deliberately conflates Islam, the religion, with Islamism, an aggressive political ideology. This is causing deep divisions in Canada about Muslims and it is contributing to the alienation of Muslim Canadians from the rest of us.

fred... i think you're way off base here.

all i'll say here is that the family was caught lying about this affair more than once. perhaps their grief is to blame for some of that.

might i suggest you take a fact-finding tour of the muslim middle east?

i suggest, however that you do not reveal your sexual preference during this trip... it appears that being gay is a death penalty offense in virtually every one of these countries.

congrats on being a published writer.

Actually it is long past the time for a referendum on do Canadians want increased immigration from Muslim countries. Conservatives were right to stick to a steady verified acceptance of Syrian refugees. Where Harper went wrong was in not demanding repeatedly that the Ndp member resign for misleading Canadians and tarnishing our international reputation.

I think you are correct about this being an area they went wrong... they should have bought the airtime the other parties got for free in the news and corrected the false facts when the real facts came out. The media road this story while it was able to point at Harper as a big bad guy and it was immigration that rejected their request to come to Canada...etc, etc, etc,... A request that never came in because it didn't exist...

So why no correction by the media as publicly with the facts as they came out?
because it's easier to spread anger and hate then positive feelings.

Maybe point out this family was in fact not trying to get to Canada but the father, only survivor of this family tragedy was traveling with his wife and children, was going to get his teeth fixed... He was the possible captain of the boat which sank. It had other people on board that had potentially paid him for passage.. and unfortunately because he was potentially drunk the boat capsized and sank drowning almost all aboard and this terrible tragedy occurred.

What every member of the media missed for a week was It pointed out an even greater tragedy... Syria having hundreds of thousands if not millions of people fleeing their nation from persecution under the regime Canada has stood against almost since it's start.

What the media doesn't point out is 1/10th of the worlds population today is made up of displaced people. People who through no fault of there own are fleeing their homes from government's elsewhere in the world who would simply see them dead... Is the solution to bring those 800-850 million people fleeing persecution, death, or imprisonment into Canada??? Or does it make more sense to help them through either political involvement, sanctions, or by force to make it possible for them to return to their homes?

Harper pointed this whole thing out in his interview with Peter Manbridge. The CBC cut him off. Im paraphrasing but basically PM Harper was saying, "We can't simply depopulate entire areas of the world... "the tragedy is 10 million times bigger then Syria alone. We have to look at this in a totally different way and come up with solutions to solve the problems and be involved more outside of Canada before it gets to that point."

At that point rather then let him complete the explanation he changed the topic to number of seats and popular vote...wtf?!?! One of the key topics and they dropped it to talk about out voting system...

I'm sorry, but I also believe you're off base with your criticism of the Conservative party. Perhaps you're right that some conservative partisans (notice the lower case c- to differentiate them from the party) have expressed "extreme" opinions about the entire Syrian situation. As a conservative who likes to express my opinion on some forums, I do not pretend to represent the entire conservative community nor the Conservative party. So, if some commenters have gone over a line I myself would not cross, I do not attribute that opinion to the entire Conservative party or all its supporters.

Furthermore, was it actually Canadian conservatives who "spread the vilest of lies" about the Kurdi family and the refugees? I think not.

well, fred, in this case (and the irony is teabag-a-licious)... i got my info mostly from the cbc.

as most of what i've gleaned from canada's national broadcaster is simply leftwing confirmation bias... this immediately caught my attention.

don't take my word, fred... ask a german doctor...

"Many Muslims are refusing treatment by female staff and, we, women, are refusing to go among those animals, especially from Africa. Relations between the staff and migrants are going from bad to worse. Since last weekend, migrants going to the hospitals must be accompanied by police with K-9 units."

Why do you bother associating with people who still think being gay is a "sexual preference"?

Welcome to Harperstan.

I think the type of false attacks you're facing demonstrates the meanness Canadians grew tired of. These people are a small, mean segment of our society that the majority of Canadians reject.

"nonny says... small, mean segment of our society"

how about a larger, monolithic homicidal segment of our world who thinks gays should be murdered... aka the arab middle east?

I never would have guessed that you'd use an anti-Muslim undertone to justify your meanness. On second thought, of course you would - that's exactly what your type keep doing. How's that workin for ya? Not ready to say? Well Justin is ready.

"nonny whines... an anti-Muslim undertone to justify your meanness"

show where anything i have said is not factual. perhaps you think all those videos of gay men being tossed off high buildings have been faked by stephen harper?

and you're all out of sorts about my "meanness."

maybe after justin sends all those parkas, the murderers will see the light and embrace homosexuality throughout the muslim middle east?

one further thought... what does indonesia have in common with the arab middle east?

"The law in Aceh province stipulates that anyone caught having homosexual sex can face up to 100 strokes of a cane, a fine of up to 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of gold (about $37,400) and imprisonment of up to 100 months."

so, nonny... you still think i'm the real meanie here?
