Affirmative Action Ban Blamed for Low Minority Enrollment
The new Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley is upset at the low numbers of black and hispanic students. In this year's freshman class, there are 108 African American students and 340 Latino students -- out of a class of 3,671.
During a meeting yesterday with reporters, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau said black and Hispanic enrollment on campus is shockingly low and he doesn't think that's what voters intended when they banned affirmative action.Well, not exactly...I believe voters knew exactly what would happen - the good news is that these 448 students got in on merit. That soon might not be the case.....
However, he said campus officials will look for ways to work within the system to change the admissions picture.
