Is our tax system fair?
Here's a new study that shows that the top 10% of earners in Canada pay 50% of income taxes.
he study, called Federal Income Tax: Slicing the Pie, examined data of 4.5 million filers between 1990 to 2002.And, the top 10% are paying more than ever...
"The results were conclusive. The one-tenth of tax filers who were in the highest earnings bracket provided more than one half of the revenue from federal income tax in 2002," wrote Patrice Martineau, analyst at StatsCan and author of the report.
Martineau's study also found the proportion of tax the highest filers are paying has been increasing. "In 1990, this 10 per cent of tax filers accounted for 46.0 per cent of total federal income tax; by 2002, this group accounted for 52.6 per cent."Let's make the system fairer - and go to a flat tax.
