This just in from Rome...
ITALIAN bishops gave warning yesterday against Catholics marrying Muslims, citing cultural differences and fears that children born to mixed marriages would shun Christianity.
Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the president of the Italian Bishops Conference, said: “In addition to the problems that any couple encounters when forming a family, Catholics and Muslims have to reckon with the difficulties that inevitably arise from deep cultural differences.”

You really have to take things with a grain of salt. The only definitive rules for anything at all in the church must be issued directly from the Pope himself, as he receives his guidance after much prayer from the Holy Spirit (this is what we believe and hold as truth). (Wow, I know a lot of people who would be surprised to hear me talking like this)Obviously there are a lot of examples through history where people weren't listening to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and completely betrayed and ignored their duties as the head of the Church of God. Thankfully, those days are long gone and we have entered into an era of a renewed faithfulness to the mission given to us by God.
As for this...meh. They are kind of right. I see more in common with those who practice Judaism than with those from Middle Eastern nations who practice a very strict and orthodox form of Islam. Keep in mind these bishops are not just referring to religious differences: whatever they may be, the problem lies in the cultural differences that compound any pre-existing religious differences. I think they are referring more to an "Eastern World/Western World" culture conflict.
In the end it isn't really their business to decide who marries who. That's a decision only the individual can make. However, they do raise an interesting point, I must concede.
