Here's a scary NDP candidate...

Of course, from my perspective, it's the NDP candidates who are the most scary...but this one's really loony.
An NDP candidate in Quebec is offering praise for Cuban President Fidel Castro and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, and says the Canadian government should run Air Canada, CN Rail, and the oil and gas industry.

Leo-Paul Lauzon, a university economics professor in Quebec known for his left-wing views, said Canada should never have privatized those national commodities.

He also said the country should never have let private companies take over the energy sector.

"Natural gas: at minimum, the federal government should have a part ownership that didn't give them legal control but effective control," he said.

Lauzon was asked if he thought Chavez was an example Canada should look to. Supporters praise Chavez for spending oil revenues on popular social programs for the poor, but critics say he uses Venezuela's state-run oil industry as a political tool and has become increasingly authoritarian.

"Yes, it's a good example and I'm not ashamed to say it. The same thing with Fidel Castro. Look what they did, you know, for the population," Lauzon said.
Nothing like praising Castro and what he has done to the population. If you don't count the dire poverty of the country, and his horrible human rights record, he's done OK.

Well, socialism and democracy is an oxymoron. Lauzon is a ham. I live in Québec...rigorous intellectual debate is not our strong point; hurling anti-American diatribes isn't my idea of intelligence. Quebecers may think themselves advanced but their political rhetoric is from another time and place. It's 19th century romanticism transported into contemporary times - It's pathetic. As for nationalization, yup, nothing like letting half-assed civil servants run the show. I pay to have other jackasses make decisions for me under the laughable guise of collective compassion. Québec is as corrupt a place as they come on the continent - Gilles DuShlepp's thoughts on the matter notwothstanding. And what is it with Québec and their fascination with Cuba? And Catalans and Palestinians fo that matter. Would a Quebecer, when push comes to shove, trade his life (which is closer to American principles) for a Cuban one? Not bloody likely. We live in relative affluence under the bosom of Canadian protection and in a bigger context, American power. It has little to do with savvy Quebecois economics. Cubans are the ones escaping a mythical state - people like Lauzon should keep this in mind. He should indeed be embarrassed...I see he's a University teacher. Hmmm.
