Stephen Harper misses one important element of crime

Stephen Harper unveiled his plan for 'restoring safe streets and communities' today. Part of the plan is to NOT proceed with decriminalization of marijuana. As you probably know, I support the complete LEGALIZATION of marijuana. Afterall, if you really want to fight crime, then let's take the Hell's Angels out of the marijuana business. Legalization does that - instantly!

Many conservatives in the US are coming to this conclusion - people like Milton Friedman and William F. Buckley.

We need some Conservatives in this country who will tell the truth about the importance of legalizing marijuana.

You are 100% right. it is inconsitant policy to support individual right in some area but then refuse them in other areas. What do I care if someone wants to smoke ajoint after work?

Ferrethouse,

Your logic falls apart everytime you contribute to the medical bills of anyone who does something that is hazardous to their health. Shall we criminalize cigarettes and alcohol and Big Macs and rock climbing too? Because you're paying the bills of people who have heart attacks and fall off of mountains too you know. So if you're going to extend Fred's logic to cocaine, I'm going to extend your logic to fatty foods.

Myrddin,

What's the difference between the Liberals and the Hells Angels? Well, for one thing, murder. Is murder a good start or shall I enumerate some other differences?

And herein lies the conservative dilemna. Nothing's ever bad, or undesirable. Everything's always evil and unacceptable.

I think that one of the major benefits of privatized health care would be that people would think twice about adopting unhealthy behaviours because it would eventually end up costing them. The way it is now, unhealthy behaviours are subsidized by those who pay the most taxes.
