Hugo Chavez makes anti-semitic speech...

Tom Gross reports that Hugo Chavez gave an anti-semitic speech on December 24th. Here is what he said:
...the descendants of those who crucified Christ... have taken ownership of the riches of the world, a minority has taken ownership of the gold of the world, the silver, the minerals, water, the good lands, petrol, well, the riches, and they have concentrated the riches in a small number of hands.
You can read the speech in Spanish here.

Anti-semitic is a complicated phrase to use as a weapon against Chavez. Semitic is technically a word that means of Arab descent. It does not really mean anti-Jewish or anti-Isreal per se. Actually, both Palestinians and Israelis are semitic peoples, for example. In any case, I do not see the connection between the small quote taken from Chavez and the complaint of anti-semitism. It seems more to me that he is complaining of income inequality that has ironically resulted throughout history. Sad, but true, and something we can fix, if WE WANT TO.

Now "the descendents of the same who crucified Christ" could be a bald reference to Jews, or it could be a reference to those who generally reject Christ, the Redistributor of Wealth (and the whole speech was full of Christian exhortations), or it could be a snide tangential reference to Jews disguised as a broad swipe at people who do not like Chavez's liberation theology con game. The latter is my interpretation. Chavez is a disgusting fraud.
