Shame on CUPE Ontario....

They have voted to support a boycott against Israel.
Ontario's largest public sector union has voted to back an international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

Delegates at the Canadian Union of Public Employees' convention in Ottawa voted to support the campaign yesterday, saying they would do so until Israel recognizes the Palestinian right to self-determination.

CUPE Ontario, which represents 200,000 public sector workers, is joining a campaign that started last July and is supported by 20 Quebec organizations. A CUPE Ontario news release cited the success of boycotts in ending apartheid in South Africa as a sign the strategy would work.
Gee, they have it all backwards. It's the Palestinians who want to deny Israel's right to exist, no?

Dogmatic collectivism finds its true level, that of opposition to conventional Western nationhood. CUPE should learn what 'Winter in Moscow' was all about.

Israel is a nation under siege but with functioning democratic institutions. Meanwhile, Palestinian political luminaries laud an Iranian imbecile who calls for Israel to be vaporized. CUPE is known by the company it keeps.

WTF? Israel has always accepted / offered a Palestinian state and the arabs have always rejected it. Boycott "palestinians" until they cease their killing of innocent people.

Contractors can do the work that CUPE employees carry out.

Canadians should vote for a government that is committed to making government smaller and saving millions of dollars in the process.

CUPE employees are so fantastic and valuable according to they themselves that they shouldn't have trouble finding someone else willing to pay them what they're worth.

"It's the Palestinians who want to deny Israel's right to exist, no?"

The Israelis are no better than the Palestinians. The lack of respect for life by radicals on both sides is sickening and too often the Israeli government is made up of such figures. Ariel Sharon, for example, was found legally and morally responsible for the 1982 massacre of innocent Palestinian refugees outside of Beruit. Tens of thousands live in squalor because we stand back and let the hot heads on both side ruin their rights to life.

The quotations around Palestinians by the first Anon shows a dispicable lack of respect for an entire community struggling for their very existence. Check points, the Wall, Army patrols and other acts of occupation make Gaza little more than a geographical statement as even if the people of its scattered communities want to meet at a "state" or "provincial" level they could not. Israel gets in the way.

Also the quotations suggest that Palestinians are not a community in their own right. This is not the case. Tens of thousands self-identify as such and who is it to say that they are wrong? It is complete BS.

Israel is not so much a nation under seige but a nation in the process of colonizing another. Colonization has never been pretty: it wasn't five hundred years ago and there is no reason to think that it should be now.

That is not to say that Israelis should leave. That is as silly as saying that Canadians should leave. Many of them do not have homes to go back to and for many more Palestine is their home. However that gives them no right to continue to oppress the native population of Palestine, the Palestinians.

Kudos to CUPE Ontario for siding against a state that has proven itself time and time again to not care for the santicity of life. I would also appluad if they condemended the Palestinian radicals as well--however it is easier to identify with the plight of a people trodden upon by occupation and war then it is to identify with those who bring occupation and war to another.

We can take our own counter action of course.

1. Invest in Isreal. It is a democratic, free market society so there are lots of opportunities for you to place your financial support.

2. Boycot CUPE whenever possible. In the next municiple elections (this November) make a point of supporting candidates who will dump public sector unions and privatize however and wherever possible. You will get a big tax savings as a bonus.

Remember, we are free agents and capable of making our own decisions. Supporting free and democratic societies around the world helps ensure Canada can also remain free and democratic as well.

Pete, did you know that your Palestine actually included both the west bank and Jordan before 1923? Why don't the Palestinians try to wipe out and take over Jordan instead of Isreal?

Just to add to John's tidy note:

"Zahir Muhsein is a Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee member.

In a 1977 interview with a Dutch magazine, he said:

The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism.

For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa. While as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan."

The Palestinians are newly minted "people group" being used by Arab nations to antagonize Israel.

You want a solution for "Palestinian Arabs", get the Arabs to recognize Israel's sovereignty and right to exist. And good luck with that.

Nationality IS NOT equivelent to cultural identity. Quebec has never existed as a nation yet people claim to be Quebecois.

I personally know a number of Palestinians. They are the people who lived in the territory of Palestine, which prior to 1918 was a province in the Ottoman Empire.
These people have suffered and lost much. Many have lost their homes, their loved ones, and their lively hood.

It is just as ignorant to label all Israelis as evil blood lusting tyrants as it is to do so the Palestinians--it is even worse to deny their legitimate existence.

Individuals do not make up cultural groups, indeed much like class culture does not exist if we freeze time for an instant. It is a historical phenomenom built up on relationships of common experience. Regardless of what one man said Palestinians exist and people today, Canadians even, claim to be Palestinian in the same way other Canadians claim to be Scottish. Those living in the Occupied Territories also claim to be Palestinian while those in Jordan, I am sure, see themselves as Jordanian.

By denying the existence of Palestinians to take a step closer to the irrational extremes of racism and bigotry--which I accuse no one here of, though your 'Orientalist' perspective is clear in your denial of the Palestinian identity as it exists today.

The Palestinians could always have land, peace and prosperity, but nothing to them is worth giving up the right to kill Jews. They are merely continuing (and have a directly link historically) to what Hitler was attempting.

And Pete, don't listen to the idiotic theories of Edward Said. People who used terms like "orientalist" are the true racists.

Israel has exported Medical technology and other life saving break throughs that have saved more people than the whole population of Israel itself.

Palestine is unsafe for homosexuals and shame on CUPE for ignoring the Gays that are murdered in public by the Sharia based Muslims, and for the record , I have yet to hear about Palestinian Christians becoming suicide bombers that slaughter civilians on buses and in cafe's .

I would just like to point out that Sid Ryan was stupid enough to post his cell phone number on the Anti-Israel press release. You can contact him and let him know that he is an idiot at: Sid Ryan, President, CUPE Ontario, 416-209-0066 (cell). Ask him, as a Hamas supporter under what circumstances suicide bombing is politically justified in a democracy.
