Fire the head of CSIS...

How on earth can you fight the war on terror without profiling?
The director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service said Tuesday that the spy agency avoids racial profiling because it is "fundamentally stupid'' and does not knowingly use information gleaned under torture offshore because the practice is "morally repugnant.''

James Judd told a gathering of Canadian judges on Tuesday that he is "acutely aware'' of complaints that the agency, along with several other organizations, targets the Muslim community in fighting the war on terror. "We don't profile because it's fundamentally stupid and we don't have enough resources,'' said Judd. "From a national security perspective, we can't afford to have whole communities feel alienated.''
It sounds like James Judd is fundamentally stupid.

But to racially profile would upset Arabs and other Muslims, hurt their feelings, and violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Also, if CSIS were to racially profile certain people, it would be fuel to the Conservative Party's opponents....I could just see Bob Rae and Jack Layton seizing the headlines if CSIS were allowed to do this.

Sean explain to me exactly how this would violate the Charter?

Cite me section and verse, because the version that I have seen does not have anything about hurt feelings.

All of the "fundamental rights" that could be applicable are tempered by language within the applicable sections as well as section 1 that qualifies all of the rights by limits that are limits "demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society".

So to simply invoke the Charter whenever there is something that you don't like is either pure ignorance of what the Charter actually says or simply dishonesty by trying to end the discussion by invoking the Charter without explanation in the hopes that whomever is on the other side of the debate will simply go away because he or she doesn't know what the Charter says.

What the Charter is supposed to do is protect people from baseless or arbitrary depravation of liberties. So when the cop pulls over the weaving car, it is a reasonable infringement of the rights of the drunken driver.

Similarly if virtually all terrorist acts are being executed by young muslim men from the Middle East or South Asia, I would think that any such people deserve some special attention in the secuirty check at the airport or when they are buying enough fertilizer to cover Saskatchewan. I may have missed it, but I don't think that any grannies from Wetaskawin have been implicated in any bombings lately.

If done properly racial profiling is just smart policing.

Bob Rae and Jack Layton can get indignant all they want. I would wager that itf you got out of the People's Republic of Vangroovy you would probably find that a firm stand on security, while Jack and Bob wring their hands, would earn more votes than would be lost. The Liberals and the NDP already have the concession for the hand wringers and the perpetually morally offended.
