Shades of Quebec....
I remember when a Catholic school said that children couldn't speak in english in Quebec....
In the latest round of the language wars between the Dutch and French speaking halves of Belgium, a Flemish town has banned the use of anything other than Dutch in schools. The rules extend to playground conversations between children. This is all so silly and counter-productive. Let the children speak what they want....
Under the new order, passed unanimously by the town council of Merchtem, it is forbidden for parents, pupils or visitors to speak a "foreign" language, such as French, English or Arabic, while on state school premises.
The rule covers mothers waiting to pick up their children in the school entrance hall, or siblings whispering during break-times.
