Pollution penalties from Europe???

This would affect us too...but would the Europeans be this stupid?
One press conference followed another at the United Nations climate talks in Nairobi, and everyone got to chime in. The UN, the Climate Change Secretariat, national governments and international bodies like the European Union -- their statements were generally boring, since the summit hadn't arrived at anything new. That changed Wednesday evening, when the EU delegation issued an invitation to the day's final meeting, where a serious threat to the United States was formulated.

Irish EU delegate Avril Doyle said the European Commission was considering a punitive tariff on imports from countries guilty of gross environmental irresponsibility. The measure would specifically target Australia and the United States.

How would this work with countries that already have trade agreements in place?

A good trade war with Eurabia might be just the ticket to send their moribund economies spiralling downwards.

It could help them in the long run due to the massive social upheaval this would cause - they couldn't afford to keep buying peace from their Muslim inhabitants, so the internal wars could start sooner rather than later - when the infiltrators populations will be even larger.

I understand that the EU already imposes a lot of tariffs on stuff that is imported from Canada and de facto barriers and bans on lots of other things--we run a substantial trade deficit with the EU as it is.

Tariffs outside of the GATT/WTO would simply result in tit-for-tat retaliation. Not great for Canada but much worse for promoting exports from sluggish European economies.

Fact is, there are lots of sources for fashionable manufactured goods, expensive cars and wine in the world and if the Europeans don't want to sell them to us we can buy from other sources.

The EU needs the US a hell of a lot more than the US needs the EU. A wonderful case of shooting yourself in foot while trying to loose a warning shot...

This is hilarious. All the previous commentors have hit it right on the head. Any country stupid enough to go along with this is only going to succeed in deflating their own already flacid economies.
