Are electric cars decades away????

Yes, the French seem to think so....
Internal combustion engine has more of a future than all-electric, according to internal report.

A report commissioned by the French government has concluded there "isn't much future" in all-electric cars, at least before the year 2030. The 129-page report, drawn up by Jean Syrota, one of France's leading energy experts, was originally destined to be unveiled at the Paris motor show in September. The government, though, has so far refused to publicize the report, due to the unfavorable nature of the conclusions.

High battery pack costs, limited range and speed, and the absence of any battery charging infrastructure all combine to make all-electric vehicles unviable, according to the report. It predicts these factors are all unlikely to change significantly over the next two decades.

When mankind invented the internal combustion engine we hit on a technology that has great range, great reliability, plenty of power and the ability to operate in extreme cold and heat. Add to that about 100 years of constant refinements and you have a machine that will be difficult to displace with anything else in the short term.

I'll stick to my gas guzzler until someone invents a car that has a mini nuclear reactor in it.

Electric cars are a pipe-dream of the environmentalists.

First there is the "small" problem of the batteries which like the hybrid buses Toronto purchased fail after 1-2 years of operation.

... but more fundamental is where will the power come from ... coal fired plants , or nuclear power plants ?

The current electric grid cannot support electric cars.

They had the idea, and provide all the panic and hysteria. They don't have to provide a realistic solution, that's someone elses problem. Like using planes and buying carbon credits, the hypocrisy is mind boggling.

I will go to my grave protesting the use of these darn internal combustible engines.
Before anybody gets to renew their insurance they should have to spend a week as a pedestrian breathing in and choking on the fumes, trying to cross a street even on a X walk without having his/her life threatened, pushing his/her toddler or baby in a stroller on a sidewalk downtown, and waiting for a bus without sound muffs .
People driving everywhere and anywhere 24/7 and idling in line
at their local fastfood drivein junk food joint or getting their morning Tim Horton's fix has got to be the stupidest , most selfish, MINDLESS thing humanity does.
Wake up and smell the exhaust.
Everybody turns a blind eye to the $273 Billion we put out as taxpayers to support the use of these incombustible engines.
And... better fuel efficiency will do bugger all about the average 8.5 Canadians killed per day on our roads and streets.
The only time I get a break is when there is a snow storm just before the snowplows have done their thing.
Damn rights I have ROAD RAGE and I don't even drive.
The only way to protect myself is to surround myself with a piece of metal heavier than yours to pick up a plastic bag of groceries or some other item while I circle the parking lot looking for the closest to store parking spot.

Cities have been around for thousands of years. They are what they are and are much cleaner than just a few decades ago.

For just as many thousands of years some people can, and some can't live in cities. If you choose to live in a city, then you choose to endure what they are.

It sounds like you would be much happier in a small town because you are not going to change the fast pace of cities. It's your choice.
