Grit rationing was imposed with A roads and bus routes prioritised but less important arteries abandoned to the elements.

Supplies were being given as a priority to the Highways Agency so it could keep motorways running.

In some parts of the country more grit has been deposited on roads in the last four days than in the whole of last year's winter, meaning stocks have almost run out.

Hertfordshire County Council has used 4,000 tons since Sunday and its supplier is only able to provide 160 tons more per day.

Wiltshire has used 7,000 tons and has 1,000 tons left. Gloucestershire and Worcestershire are also rationing grit runs.
