Was Ablonczy fired?

The pro-lifers are making it seem like Ablonczy was fired for funding the Toronto Gay Pride Parade.

I'd like to know more - but the silence from the Conservatives is deafening!

Let me point out a few things. First, I am really happy that our Conservative government has funded and has been funding Toronto Gay Pride this year and for many years. Gay Pride, despite a lot of problems, is a huge tourist attraction, and deserves government funding. So, hats off to Ablonczy for funding Gay Pride. Let's give credit where credit is due.

Secondly, the Government has been quietly allowing in gay refugees from Iran. This is an initiative from Jason Kenney, and should also be applauded.

The left likes to paint the Conservatives as horribly anti-Gay, but that isn't uniformly true. Yes, there are the so-cons who are certainly anti-Gay, but there are thousands and thousands of ordinary conservatives, across this great country, who aren't. Can we at least applaud two good things this government has done?

I do not understand what this tempest in a teacup is all about??

Mr. Michael Ignatieff, the new leader of Liberal Party of Canada, wanted to cast himself in the eyes Canadian public as a populist politician and he wanted to march in Gay Pride Parade in downtown Toronto. Ms. Ablonczy decided to accommodate his wish and she made sure that Toronto Gay Pride Parade went as planned. This is not news, this is old style politics; I scratch your back when you need it and you scratch my back when I need it.

Michael Ignatieff is a grown up man who has ambitions to become next Prime Minister of Canada and Canadian government of the day has an obligation to nurture and prepare him for that job.

If Mr. Michael Ignatieff decides to hang himself while he is waiting to become next Prime Minister of Canada, Canadian government of the day is dully obliged to supply Mr. Ignatieff with as much rope as it takes to get that job done properly.
This is a very serious issue and it cannot be taken lightly.

If Canadian government of the day fails to supply a rope to Mr. Ignatieff while he is a Prime Minister in Waiting and decides to hang himself and than Mr. Ignatieff becomes a Prime Minister of Canada one day and than he decides to jump over the cliff and take us with him the damage inflicted in such scenario is very difficult to predict.

Considering magnitude of a potential national disaster that government of the day was able to avert with this $400,000.00 dollars grant to Gay Pride Parade in Toronto Ms. Ablonczy should be given the Order of Canada for being one of the most astute, foresightful and responsible politicians in Ottawa.

I don't agree that a Conservative govt or any govt should be helping fund a Pride Event, as they are quite the display of overt sexuality. To connect that with tourism and the branding of Canada in the govt eyes might not be the best thing for it.

Regardless, I was surprised to read in your post that the Conservative govt has given grants to Pride events in the past - do you happen to have an article or research about this? I'm quite curious. The outcry seems to suggest this has never happened before.
Cheers!

Ah, it was negligible, that's why. According to The Star: "Nor is this the first time that Harper's government has set aside money to support Pride in Toronto. For the past two years, the event received $35,000 from Heritage Canada, as well as some smaller grants from Service Canada's summer jobs program, the Canada Council for the Arts and a sustainability fund at Heritage."

$400k is quite a bit more.

Why be proud of the action of a party when that party subsequently disavows the action as that of "an isolated" individual?

And all this conservative angst about public nudity makes me think that perversion really proliferates in the minds of conservatives. Why can't they look at a naked body without thinking about sex?

When they go to florence, do they need to run to the bathroom after seeing Michaelangelo's sculpture of David?
