White police recruit in the UK wins his case....
We need some cases like this in Canada.
A police force has agreed to pay a rejected white male recruit undisclosed compensation after being warned that its recruitment policy might be illegal.
Avon and Somerset Constabulary reached the deal, believed to run to thousands of pounds, with Ralph Welsman, one of 186 white men whose applications were rejected in favour of those from women and ethnic minorities.
The settlement means the case will not go to an employment tribunal, but the force and Mr Welsman's solicitors declined to comment on it, citing a confidentiality agreement.
The force said reports that it faced a bill of millions of pounds if all the rejected applicants made successful claims were "inaccurate", and it disputed suggestions that Mr Welsman was receiving up to £25,000. In a statement issued by his solicitors, Mr Welsman said: "I am happy the police have admitted they were wrong to discriminate against me on the grounds of race and sex." It is not known if he will re-apply to join.
