Some real facts about HIV and AIDs...

Not being content to merely just accept what is said at the World AIDs conference, I decided to check out the latest Canadian Government report on HIV and AIDs statistics. You can get the latest report here...and it is current up to December 21st, 2005.

1. Postive HIV tests have stabilized.

Here are the number of positive HIV tests:

1998 2341
1999 2231
2000 2113
2001 2178
2002 2494
2003 2497
2004 2535
2005 2483

2. Most people who have tested positively are male

Cumulative test results to date:

Male 48,103
Female 9,325 (or 16%)

3. AIDs cases are at their lowest level in 22 years

There were only 279 reported cases of AIDs in ALL of Canada in 2005.

1992 1,751
1993 1,828
1994 1,790
1995 1,647
1996 1,195
1997 725
1998 646
1999 663
2000 497
2001 413
2002 402
2003 378
2004 313
2005 279

4. To date, 91% of AIDs cases are male.

Cumulative Cases

Male Adults 18,324
Female Adults 1,786

In 2005, only 213 male cases of AIDs were reported and only 59 female cases.

5. 92% of total deaths frm AIDs have been male.

Males 13,829
Females 1,226

6. Children have been largely unaffected by AIDs in Canada.

Only 93 children have died of AIDs since 1987.

7. Heterosexuals have not been affected by AIDs.

Over 95% of AIDs cases have been in the homosexual community.

One last question. I have heard repeatedly that many people don't know they have HIV. And, I accept that. But, then why have the number of AIDs cases gone down. Clearly, many (if not most) people with HIV are NOT getting treatment (since they don't know they have the virus)....and yet AIDs cases are going down. I suspect that the virus has lost some of its potency. Perhaps there is another explanation, but I don't think we're going to get it at the AIDs conference.

From my perspective, AIDs is now largely an African problem. We should be aggresively supporting programs that distribute condoms, etc. into Africa. Changing behavior can combat AIDs....I'm not sure the answer is tons of drugs.

Why didn't Harper attend the AIDS Conference in Toronto?

If he had done so, it could have helped to soften his image, but he arrogantly refused to attend.....Just like Jean Chretien refused to attend the conference hosted in Vancouver back in 1996.

It should be noted, that Prime Minister Mulroney attended the Conference when it was held in Montreal.

Hey Sean, the reason Harper didn't attend the AIDS Conference is probably the same reason you'll never see Jack Layton at the Calgary Stampede.Either man cannot win one single vote by going to either event. In fact they probably whould lose votes by the publics stereotyping and utter prejudice of what they THINK that leaders beliefs are,(look at the grief Clements is getting!!)in other words, people just want a politician to blame, and Harper can't cure AIDS single handedly, can he? Promising false hope and money like the Liberal's do and then breaking the promise, is surely a lot worse..

You said, "I'm not sure the answer is tons of drugs." Gawd no, we wouldn't actually WANT to save any african lives, with drugs that are proven to work) would we? (Your statement is unbelievable)!!!!
