Take back the night?

I hate these 'nights'.....gee, men can only march under the 'lead' of women? Should I bring an image showing feminists to be men-haters?

The plain fact of the matter is that the streets of any Canadian city is safer for women than for men.

I once had a debate with a women's studies student in university who told me that even if my sister was killed in the Montreal massacre and I wanted to march in solidarity, I should have to do so at the back of the line because I'm a man. When I suggested that it's unfair that male family members of victims of violence against women should take a back seat to man-hating ideologues, I was told "too bad".

Never mind, these people have been at it in Ottawa since at least 1984 and their numbers have dwindled in recent years. They don't really do any harm and the only media venue that reports on them is the teachers union-owned TV station CJOH.

If womyn want to 'take back the night' - they should vote for law & order party's, or at least a party that's willing to enforce the laws we already have, certainly not leftist party's.

That being said - when did women or even men walking alone have the night? - only in the last few years in some parts of the civilized countries.

Me again. The anonymous chick Jeremy hates.

I think the women's movement does itself no favours by pushing men to the back of the line. It's stupid.

Likewise, if I may open another can of worms here, the way the women's movement skips past the failure that abortion represents and reduces it to a matter of choice denies the sadness and regret that virtually every woman who has gone down this path has to live with.

When I see these "take back the night posters all I can do is sigh. Canadians really don't really appreciate how good they really have it and how comparatively safe they really are.
When I tell my friends what I have seen and lived through before Canada they are aghast. Yet when I tell them that Canada is one of the safest countries in the world to live in and that Ottawa is almost symbolic of that reality they don't seem to want to believe me.

When I came here to this country 22 years ago I remember seeing the front page of the Ottawa Citizen in my first weekend in the city and was horrified to see the bold headlines "Murder rate Doubles" (it had been 3 and was suddenly up to 6) Of course I had to read further to realize they were talking about a murder rate PER ANNUM !

I couldn't believe my eyes-having just come from a country and city where the Murder rate was a minimum of 14 dead on any FRIDAY NIGHT and which reached and exceeded the entire annual Canadian Murder rate on the Easter Weekend!

Over the years I have watched somewhat bemused as people have talked about imminent disaster and their city being inundated with crime, and boosting the police while in effect all was well and quiet and the population was as safe as any social paradise could be (for that really is what our community is.)

It seems to me that Ottawans and often other Canadians are almost always in a perpetual 'wannabee' state of mind. They are probably bored with the quiet, safe and sedate (boring and non-eventful) lifestyle. They watch COPS and 'want' to be frightened. They need to be excited and they are jealous of our violent US neighbours so they invent a crime situation-and a response in Ottawa which has absolutely no comparison to reality. Its quite pathetic actually. We are becoming a country of bored, frightened losers. For nothing.

And through this all I still see young women walking down Sparks street alone and safe and happy all the time-with nary a care or a fear in the world. They know they are safe so where does this nionsense all come from? From our fevered minds I venture to suggest.
