My name is Fred and I am a gay conservative living in Ottawa. This blog supports limited government, the right of the State of Israel to live in peace and security, and tries to expose the threat to us all from cultural relativism, post-modernism, and radical Islam. I am also the founder of the Free Thinking Film Society in Ottawa (www.freethinkingfilms.com)

Censorship in Ottawa!!!

In November, I decided to start a new Conservative Film Society here in Ottawa, and as my first film, I picked a film called Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West.

I went to the Rainbow Cinema at the St. Laurent shopping centre and I rented a theatre for January 29th. It was all set. I paid a deposit...and then in January I paid the last half of the rental charge. I gave the maanager all the pertinent details about what I was exactly showing.

Well, this week, the manager received an e-mail from a retired professor of history in Ottawa who said that the movie maligned muslims...and within two hours, they cancelled the film!

Talk about censorship. I would have respected them had they declined to accept the booking..but to cancel within 3 weeks of the one show....

I now have another venue - the Ottawa Public Library....same time (January 29th at 7 PM)...and just a $4.25 admission charge.

For those of you interested in attending, here is a link to the movie site and you can watch a 27 minute trailer.

Comments? Please pass the word to anybody you know in Ottawa that they should attend.

Does the movie malign Muslims?

If it's a movie that deals with radical Muslims and not Muslims in general, then I object to this censorship.

Er, delete my first comment, it wasn't suppose to be posted. And this comment, too. Unless you really want my comment to be there.

FYI: The St. Laurent Mall is in an area with a significant Muslim population.

I have heard Bridgette Gabriel speak and her message does not malign Muslims at all. It does however expose the radical elements of Islam and forces the rose coloured glasses crowd to realize that demons are out there that need to be dealt with. When she talks about the destruction of a very progressive Lebanon by the radical Muslims, funded by Syria and led by Arafat, it made me angry. Not angry at Muslims, but angry at the likes of this professor who complained. Angry because they refuse to take their heads out of the sand and reflect on the real world around them. Listen to her talk about the gradual destruction of Lebanon....the only Christian democracy in the ME in 1970. 4 years later, it was destroyed by radical muslims in their hatred of Christianity and the Jews of Isreal.

That's really too bad! If I get accepted to Carleton for MA in public policy, I'll be in Ottawa to join the club! Good luck with it!

I would be very surprised if the OPL doesn't cave in to similar pressure tactics when they're inevitably applied.

Nothing silences speech quite so effectively as fear of legal action or harassment.

So what if it maligns Muslims, whatever that means...the point of free speech is that it's free. And who's to decide what's "maligning" or not...

Let me be very clear here....
There is a fundamental difference between a group identified by whatever genetic markers and a philosophy.

A philosophy deserves no special status merely because its called religion. Its not in any way racism, a trick perpetrated on the people by French Canada and some gay groups among others, to get politically correct special status as a group.

Many people died for teh right to question irrational religious and secular authority throughout western history.

We must not allow this essential freedom to disapear because of a trick of semantics.

When Obsession was scheduled to be shown in Winnipeg (with Nonie Darwish in person speaking afterwards), the local usual suspect started a campaign to have the screening cancelled.

The result was so much publicity that they held it over for a second night, and both nights were sold out. I'd be very interested to see if something similar happens in this case.

As for notloz's comment "you should bloody well get informed"--how ironic that his/her idea of "getting informed" is to suppress any discussion of how Islamists are a threat to everyone--Christians, Jews, atheists, Hindus... and, most of all, a threat to those Muslims who don't buy into their Wahhabi vision of the world.

Fred, this story is reported in the Ottawa Sun today (Jan 25), albeit buried at the bottom of page 26.

Expect Sheema Khan (the CAIR-CAN shill) and the odious, Jew-hating Mo el-Masry (UWO) to weigh in shortly on the "islamophobic" nature of Obsession. Pay them no heed. Screen the film. Discuss it publicly. Awaken the public to the menace that is Islamism.

It would be nice if NOTIOZ could at least learn to spell.

He should read Bruce Bawer's "While Europe Slept." He compares the religious right of the US to Europe's relgious right (the muslims) and finds no comparison. The evangelicals in the US don't resort to honour killings, suicide bombing, etc.

Fred, I remember when you first planned this event, and I've thought a lot about it during January. I'm afraid I won't be able to make it, I'm going to have to babysit my brother's kids for a few days, but would otherwise very much love to attend.

I dropped by today to give you this.

In case it doesn't work:

Best wishes on the 29th, Fred.

Notloz: What's your point? I am not on the religious right!

GayandRight, I emailed you about a blog where I think you'd feel right at home. The regulars include gays, straights, atheists, members of various religions (and various degrees of adherence to those religions, although we all agree that Fred Phelps and his ilk are complete assholes and a waste of oxygen), and, in general, they're a smart and funny bunch. I hope you'll check it out.

As for the "fundamentalist Christians are scarier than fundamentalist Muslims" stick that notloz is wildly waving... Well, I disagree with just about every position of fundamentalist Christians. Having said that, I am a lot less concerned about those who think gays shouldn't be allowed to marry than I am about those who think gays shouldn't be allowed to live.

I don't hate muslims at all.....nor do i hate democracy.

I love our western way of life...and that is what is being threatened by Radical Islamists.

It's unfortunate that you cannot see it.

Notloz is a fanatic, Fred is not.

I also prefer religious diehards who believe gays should not marry to religious diehards who believe we should not live - duh.

I love the smell of projection in the morning...

Plus, as despicable as Phelps and his ilk are, I haven't noticed any of them exploding themselves in crowded subways.

you exasperate that same mentality onto you're social group
what I belive in with you're intelligent rebuttles
prejudices and bias's that have no attatchment

Yet "ainchient" is something up with which you will not put (with apologies to W. Churchill).
